Ok, recently got around to reading Quinns' write-up of Fire & Sword.
I was most struck by the 'general-being' in the last bit, of forming lines, using formations, tactics etc.
This is something I found really missing from the first one, the only one I have played.
But I'm not convinced about the setting for the most recent version.
So quick bit of advice:
Are there any decent mods to bring this kind of formation / tactical stuff to the first game.
And do these things exist in warband, so is it worth picking that up.
Basically, is there anyway to make the game feel a bit like Total War, but you're on the horse not hovering in the sky...

It's already there in vanilla Warband(as well as the original IIRC). And there are some mods which improve on what you can do.
I'd take a look at Native Expansion (http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,173191.0.html) which adds to the basic feel without changing too much or some of the other mods if you want another experience.

gotta ask:
what's wrong with the setting?
You are basically describing Mount & Musket.

That's multi-player only isn't it? And I thought by him disliking the setting he meant the guns, but I might be mistaken.
It is. But if he wants to feel like he's on the ground in a Total War game, he should try an organized line-battle in M&M.

There's some improvement in Warband, and a bunch of mods which add it.
Also they're on about expanding it in WFaS too; the latest patch adds the ability to volley fire and I expect more will be forthcoming.

Warband is the one to get, it's basically Mount and Blade++, the only reason for the original M&B is pretty much the mods, like the Star Wars one. As for muskets, M&M is the only one I know of which is any good. WF&S isn't that bad but I agree that it feels a little different, probably because there's more direction and story than the others, which were largely freeform.

Warband is the only game of the three I play these days, I got fed up with randomly getting shot in the head in WF&S while winning a battle and I also prefer the setting of Vanilla/Warband

I really wish there was a mod that made Warband have a multiplayer campaign!
