View Full Version : Blood Bowl: Ethics

While pondering a new team I started to think, what really matters to me in BloodBowl. Sure "Having fun" but on some level you have goals in mind even if it changes 5 minutes later, that's what makes games fun.

So, what's your main driving force?

An interesting title for this thread...asking what it means to be an "ethical" Blood Bowler. I'm not a very competitive person, I'm not a great player, and I don't relish actually injuring players. For me, the best part of the game is the meta level where my opponent and I are trying wacky plays, defying the odds, and not taking anything seriously.

"Becoming Champion".

I gave up playing Bloodbowl for random, disconnected matches. Even if I win, it feels hollow. But purpose-full matches like in the Divisions, where each match counts for something more than the match itself, that's my main driving force for playing right now.

I have voted "Learning". That is what primarily drives me to play the game. Understanding the different playstyles of the teams (sometimes obvious - Skaven, Woodelves - sometimes not so much - Nurgle), realising the potential of all the skills and player development (a bit more complicated), figuring out good positioning as well as measuring the odds and consequences of every player's actions (really frickin' hard).

I would have chosen "Becoming Champion", but I guess "Learning" includes this to some degree. If you understand the game better and better, victory will usually become easier and easier to achieve.

I think I get most of my enjoyment from Blood Bowl through building an experienced side. Success is secondary to growth for me, although I look at the growth and ability of the team as a whole rather than trying to create a homegrown star player or two within their ranks.

That said I do much prefer having a context between games that leagues like the DoD provide. When matches have consequences the stories become much more interesting.

Good question, I only wish I could choose more than one option.

I voted for "Killing Elves..." This is why I am currently playing a WElf team in the DoD - I get to see more horrific injuries inflicted on elves if I am actually playing an elf team than I would otherwise! And if no horrific elf-injuring occurs there's always the elfy-touchdowns to compensate.

While I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was, to catch them is my real test but to train them is my cause, you see.

On a match to match basis, it's for doing something ridiculous, a convoluted chainpush or a one-turner or an end-to-end sprint or an incredibly long pass, and I try to specialise my team so they can do this.

But yeah overall it's reaching the top of the pile (GO MAGNATES)

I like trying things that shouldn't work, thats why I started in the DoD with Vamps but they are way too hard for me. So I've gone back to Skaven who i know how to do stupid stuff with.

Vamps are the one team I've never had any success with. All it takes is one bad game and a few injuries at the start of a league, and you quickly descend into a spiral of misery and defeat. Not for me, thanks.

I voted "winning matches", although that isn't quite accurate. I am more interested in not losing matches. Other reasons I play is to see lots of blood (whether it's my players or theirs is irrelevant), and for multiple chain-pushes.

When I played Dragon I had a turn left to score a one turner to go into the lead at the end of the fist half. Dragon anticipated this and deployed his guys in an excellent checkerboard pattern to prevent the attempt (without a -2 dodge and a 2d against block). Except I had a dude with Grab which was basically going to allow me a free run in. It was going to be the most awesome moment of all time until he rolled a blitz. I cried.

This wasn't quite what I expected when I saw "ethics"

I voted becoming champion because it involves all the other things. They're all good things.

When I called it ethics I was pondering my retirement of my undead team and who I should replace them with.
As it stands I am set to replace them with the equally slow(or slower) but more technically capable Nurgle. But, the temptation to switch to elves is hard to resist, even the fragile AV7 elves get apothecary access, more than a ghoul.

Ethics is about moral right & wrong, which is why the title was misleading.

I'm not sure how you see Nurgle as more technically capable. Nurgle have no skills out of the box, no normal AGI access, and are one of the slowest sides in BB to skill up. I think they're a very fun side to play; the beast is fun (if frustrating) and you can build a weird/fun side pretty easy with all the auras, but if you're looking for better ball handling you'd be better off with chaos (more agi 3 players) or humans (more starting skill access, in between bashy and elfy).

*checks*Pestigors are GSM? Crap, I missed that. I kinda assumed they'd be GAM what with them being the most mobile players, oh that's screwed up much of my intentions.

Necromantic are really above and beyond as the "real team+regen" God-damn, why does that have to be maxed out, I have choosing when to use my apothecary.

Totally, when I wrote the title I was intending to slur harder against elves, but then I kinda lost my way after getting distracted by the poll creation.

I'd give Humans a good look. They start with a good variety of skills. You can play them in just about any style, just don't try and out bash bashier teams or out elf really elfy teams. The 4 blitzers and ogre give good bashy options. You don't get regen, but you get the apo and av8. You get agi access on the catchers (and a lot of MV) and they can make decent blitzers with dauntless & normal blitzer skills (wrestle/tackle/strip ball/etc).

You may also consider lizards. They very neatly partition the agi and the str between skinks and saurus, but they do both pretty well. You'll need to learn to protect skinks, but you get av9 and str4 on saurus.

Absolutely, they were my tier 1 choice alongside Necromantic and Orc for mixing brutality with finesse.
All full.
Only Dark Elves are left from my initial range for that mixture now I see Nurgle for what they are, and they are dirty stinking Elves.

Wow hadn't looked at the race balance sheet in a long time. We have 6 races full and 7 races almost full (4/5 filled). It might be time to suggest raising the race cap.

I always assumed that the race balance was somehow calculated with taking into consideration the total amount of people in the Leagues. As long as there is a good mix of races I am fine with the cap being raised. Yay for diversity!

We're fine for now; there are at least 7 viable races available for new players, and that's after the recent and welcome influx of new faces.

Just to vent this here for a moment because there's nowhere else - had an awesome game for my Human team in the Naggaroth Open (mauled a Lizardman team, scored 3, put the Kroxigor and two Saurus into the injury box) only to have the game Cynaide on the final turn.

Sick.
