View Full Version : Forum suggestion: Make the unread posts consistent across devices

Hello there, RPS forum administrators,
right now the forum reports read posts as unread whenever I read it from different devices.
This is due to an ancient vBulletin setting "Mark read posts in a cookie" instead of "Mark read posts in the database".
Would you consider switching from cookies to the database?
This setting is 10 years old and with today's hardware it really plays no role other than annoying users that read RPS from different devices (eg home PC, work PC, smartphone, tablet...).
You can find the setting under AdminCP > vBulletin Options > vBulletin Options > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type > Database (automatic forum marking)
Thank you for your consideration.

I saw the thread title and was about to say "Cookie cookie cookie", but was not aware that they could store that server side. Very good suggestion, I second it!

Yes I agree.
Unless it requires large amounts of storage space of course...

It requires very little storage space. I run a forum with ~170 thousand threads (compared to the ~5 thousand in the RPS forum).
The DB table with the information is only 5 MB large.
It would be great if someone from the admins could switch the option.

Hello there, RPS sers:
General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type > Database
Really easy, helps the forum members, doesn't have any problems.

Aaah so that's why I keep re-seeing the same posts I already saw, or getting jumped too far ahead, neither of which happen on other vbulleting forums.

I'll support this. It isn't too much of a hassle (the forums aren't insanely populated), but if it is an easy fix, I see no reason not to.

Is there someone in the RPS crew who can join our cause? Or is no one reading the forum from two devices?
All it takes is one tiny little switch in the administration to make our RPS experience better.

Oh frabjous day!
Now the only problem is that pretty much everything from the last few days became "unread" for me... But I can live with that, it's one-time only (they made this change in Paradox forums too during the last few years and the same thing happened).

Works great, thank you, kind sir!
Velko: It's one time only. It happens if you change the "unread" settings.
