View Full Version : RPS US Server?
Is there any consensus from US players on a server choice for Guild Wars 2? While I'd like to join the European players, I'm thinking the ping might be prohibitive. Maybe that's a non-issue. How about it any US players, shall we aim at a certain server so we at least have the option to get organized if we want?

I dunno I used to play with someone from Australia and he did alright...
But is it actually possible for you to play in EU servers if you bought it in the US?
It being the middle of the day when we are playing would be more of an issue I'd have thought.

I was looking at this list: http://www.gw2guilds.org/servers/us?sort=guilds&order=desc
Trying to figure out a server which is neither too full nor too empty, I was tempted by Blackgate or Henge of Denravi. Henge of Denravi seems to have a lot of mixed-focus casual guilds, which I guess would fit with RPS a bit more.

Ha! And I was just trying to figure out which server had the funniest name!
For some reason Yak's Bend tickled me.
Also, I look for busy servers. Moderate would be good too. Sparse would be evil.

I don't want too busy for two things:
1) Lag. MMOs tend not to be too bad with it, but GW2 is really sensitive to lag. I'd rather do my best to avoid it.
2) Zerg. It's fun to play with a group in the PvE world, but when the group becomes so large it's basically a zerg rush, things get messy and not really fun. There are fewer chances of that with a moderate-sized server.

Dunno what you're gonna choose, but I'm'a be on Jade Quarry.

Supposedly server transfers are going to be free for the first week after release, so it's not such a big deal if you chose a wrong one.

What led you to that choice, Nalano?

Is that graphical lag? (i.e. bad framerate) Or connection lag? I haven't had a bad ping in Guild Wars 2, even while surrounded by people.

Both, really. I personally have not had framerate issues, but many, many people have, especially in crowded spaces. I did however run into connection lag during stress tests. Obviously stress tests were designed to cause this, but I have a feeling the servers are going to be crowded even if they don't do it on purpose, and I'd rather not have my enjoyment of the game spoilt by such a simple thing.

After discussions with some friends, I've decided to settle for Dragonbrand. Since it seems there isn't a whole lot of US RPS people who play GW2, I'm afraid we'll be scattered to four winds anyway.
I *am* surprised at the limited response from US players...

Same peeps I played with on AoC, WAR and Rift.

Is there really a whopping three US GW2 players around here? That's a bit disappointing.

Im here! I'll be playing on the european server though, since most of my friends + my brother are playing there.
As for playing late, I could always guest on over to the us servers.

I'm also US, will be playing on the EU server though. I'll happily guest over to a US server if there's ever events going on on any of those.

I'm a US GW2 player who was just a few moments ago staring at the home server select screen, so I came here to the RPS forums for guidance. Doesn't seem to be a consensus for us yanks, though.

I'm playing on Dragonbrand with friends, but I've heard it's already full? I don't know really. As you've noticed, US players are few and far between, so I guess pick the server you like and run with it.

I'm a US player, but I'm giving the EU server a shot for the time being. I may end up jumping off of it if lag gets in the way, though, so a backup RPS group on a US server would be nice. But with the whole guesting onto other servers that's supposed to be coming in I don't see any major need to all be on the same server, even if the guesting is limited to something like once a week or whatever. Well, aside from the WvWvW PVP, that is. But even then, if you want to do that with a specific group of people you're likely to be a lot more involved in planning than what's been seen here.

Gaijin Gamers Japan will be on Jade Quarry. Not many of us, probably 5 or 6. Timezone info: it's mid-morning for me now.

Any server trouble when you guys are playing? Jade Quarry is listed as the most populated US server according to gw2guilds.org

Anyone want to make the final call about the server and start up the guild? Or has someone done that already?
I also seem to be on the most empty server. Go figure.

It's a popular server, but more and more people have been able to get in as ANet's been upping the server capacity.

The new servers are up, and me and a couple other US RPSers have moved to Eredon Terrace, or whatever it's called.

I'm on Ferguson's Crossing (sp?) right now, but I am perfectly willing to migrate to a new server (can't get Guild achievements without a Guild ). I would just request that it not be a super-overcrowded server or a dead one.
jwflore: How crowded is Eredon? Have you had any problems finding enough people for an event? And during the events, has there been stuff for you to do? :p

Well, I've come to the decision that, for the time being, I'll be staying on the EU server with the majority of the RPS folks. The lag caused by playing from across the pond doesn't really seem to matter much for the vast majority of the time I'm playing. Occasionally I'll get a noticeable spike, but it seems that when I do it's a spike for everyone in the zone I'm in and not just for me. And while I'm playing from fairly close to the east coast of the US, there's at least one other person playing from the west coast of Canada and I haven't heard them complain of lag at all either.
I do wish that GW2 had a latency display somewhere so I could actually see what my ping is. Because if I'm pinging in the 150-ish range, which is what it feels like I'm pinging at, then that would be amazing to me. Especially considering that I used to ping almost 200 to a central US WoW server.
