View Full Version : XCOM anticipation- squad names

Everyone who knows anything knows how important it is to name your hapless, helpless XCOM soldiers after friends, family and celebrities, to make their achievements all the sweeter, and their inevitable loss that much more tragic.

Let's talk about that fragile first force of fearless fighters, doomed to die daringly. Who will be your main men on that first campaign? In honour of the fine coverage here on RPS I'll be leading the charge with the members of the Hivemind.

Alec will be a Heavy, in honour of his favourite TF2 class. We'll see how bad a healer John is in Support, and joining him in that role will be Adam, for his able support of obscure indie games. Jim strikes me as a careful tactician in a scrap, so can gain high ground and Snipe. Nathan's enthusiastic prose leads me to think he's itching to get to grips with the alien, so he'll be up there in Assault with Quinns at his side. If Psionics turns out to be a separate class Kieron will be my first, because he's mental.

How about you?

I'm so torn over preordering XCOM - I'm a bit tight on the cash front, and I have second year Uni exams looming like the Gaping Dragon, but it looks and sounds like exactly the sort of thing I love. I guess there's always Gaben's Christmas Sack Sharing but...

If I were to play it, I would probably name the squad after Fire Emblem characters.

There is no question, clearly they must be Jools, Jops, RJ and Stoo

I'll name them after Gears of War characters. But not really. I'll name them after Halo: Reach characters. But not really 2.0. I'll name them after my friend's and family, and borrow nicknames from Wing Commander characters.

You guys are making me cry.

Just a year ago I would've pirated this with no qualms, I guess Steam sales and what not have chastened me significantly :3

And I've decided on names for a 6-member squad: Hector/Wil/Raven/Lute/Amelia/Natasha (I'm a bit OCD about games where you can have male and female squad members, it must be split in half).

I would name them after favorite pornstars.

Pretty much this. Although, not favorite pornstars (people actually have those?) but just give them awesome porn-sounding names. Like:

Woody Strode
Brock Landers
Chest Rockwell
Don Johnson
Willy Mays

And the name of this squad is "Pump Friction" or the name of some other porn that is spoofing a real movie.

I preordered few days ago, good thing it's just 20$ here.

I'm probably not going to rename my squad or edit their apperance, maybe nicknames and suit colors schemes( I think preordering allows that feature). I never renamed my squaddies in original games, maybe I just didn't know how to do that in 1994 as I knew very little English then but really they had such funny names, sometimes authentic, sometime ridiculous, almost as funny as in the first footbal game I played on PC at the same time( I still remember some names like Gargarin and Pechicker(??), best players in Russian team). Sadly, since there is no base building in XCOM, I can't name my bases like before.

And the name of this squad is "Pump Friction"

Excellent.

Traditionally I have always named my squads after Bolshevik revolutionaries from 1917 Russia. Kamenev, Rykov, Bukharin, Stalin, Trotsky etc. This was mainly because I studied the period during my A-levels and enjoyed it. Seven years on, I realize that this was a rubbish idea.

Probably just going to pinch the Transformers idea.

A follow up: since it's unlikely RPS XCOM will last beyond my first few inept missions, I'll need volunteers to join my elite and hardly doomed at all organisation. Any RPS-ers like to step up? Let me know which class you'd prefer to be and I'll name a soldier after you. I'm feeling masochistic enough to play Classic Ironman, and I'll try and remember to record how you die and what rank (if any) you managed to attain.

If anyone feels like reciprocating I'll play Heavy or Support. Probably Support.

Were I getting it (I'm not enthused by what I've seen and read) I'd undoubtedly name my team members Hunter Gathers, Brock Sampson, Shore Leave, and Mile High. It might be necessary to mod Shore Leave's unit barks so that he just says "Sphinx!" every time he's selected.

Alright, my pool of recruits thus far:

Alec Meer, reprising his role as a Heavy.
Jim Rossignol, getting a nice vantage point to appreciate the terrain- may as well bring a rifle. Sniper.
John Walker; let's find out how well he really heals, in Support.
Adam Smith, Supporting those obscure indie soldiers.
Nathan Grayson, from the Colonies, arriving to the battle late, just in time to finish off the aliens and claim he won the whole thing. Assault.
Quinns, bringing that rapid fire word Assault.
Rob Florence, flings dice like bullets. Let's see if he can fling bullets like dice. Heavy.
Tim Stone will have the armour penetration all calculated out in a nice stat table for that one perfect Snipe.
Lewie Proctor leads regular Assaults on my wallet. Let's see how he does here.
Edit: almost forgot Richard Cobbett. He can be a Heavy, laying down suppression and deadly puns with equal ease.
And, of course, Keiron Gillen as a Psychic, for being mental.

Gorzan as a Sniper.
Drake Sigar as a Sniper.
lasikbear as Support.
Splynter as Support, but only if I can find a Canadian Support soldier (can one change nationality?)
Makariel in Assault.
AlexClockwork in Assault.
Tikey is the first to grab the big guns as a Heavy.
Sparkasaurusmex in Assault.
Patrick Swayze in Assault.
Edit: Sunjumper as a Heavy.
Jockie as whatever I need to fill in a gap.
hellraiserzlo joins the spooky Psychic corp.
Oshada in Assault
DWZippy as yet another Assault. I expect to go through a fair number of these, so it's nice to have plenty of names.
Drayk as a Sniper.
Lacessit as a Sniper.
Hypernetic as something that isn't Support- whichever class I determine to be the most asshole-ish.
DarkFenix grabs the big guns.
MadJax as an Assault.
Dr. Honeyslut in Support. Trust him/her, he/she is a Dr. Even if he/she's looking at you funny.

Looking great. Anyone else?

I've decided I really want to be a Heavy. I see it like this- the Heavy's going to be the guy in tough armour, sitting in heavy cover. He/she's going to be protecting himself with lots of suppression and overwatch, and has rockets and maybe also grenades to make getting too close really hazardous. The Support guy is almost always going to be in the next heavy cover over; nice and convenient when you get hit. Assault will be doing all the risky flanks, and the Sniper will be risking exposure to get vantage (note that in that dev play the Sniper died first).

If I want to survive I'd better have the biggest gun. Make me a Heavy.

I remember from one of the previews that you only get your class after your first levelup. When you start out as a rookie, you have no class assigned.

So unless you can name them later, it might be hard to realize.

Before they gain the first rank they won't have a class anyway, right? I was actually planning the same. Faceless Storm Troopers until they earned a name by surviving my glorious tactics by sheer awesomeness (or dumb luck).

In anticipation of a new lovers arrival, I started a game of X-Com (the 1994 one) and one of my soldiers in the new one will be named in honor of my best soldier in that playthrough: Evelyn Thompson, a psyker, sharpshooter and immortal badass, considering how many plasma hits to the face she survived.

a psyker
I just realized that for all these years and playthroughs I never ever researched or used any psy-abilities in original X-COM. I completed the game once or twice. Is this common or am I alone? I have a feeling I only managed to complete the game because of that bug that reset the difficulty. Blaster bombs also helped a lot.

I just realized that for all these years and playthroughs I never ever researched or used any psy-abilities in original X-COM.
The first time playing through I also went to Cydonia without any psionic powers (never bothered to research the psi-lab). My squad nearly got wiped out, only few soldiers of a fully packed Avenger made it to the final part. In subsequent games I found out that psi can make the endgame a breeze. My psyker with psionic strength of 99 (Evelyn) can take on a battlecruiser all by herself. The rest of the squad is only backup ;)

DWZippy
30-09-2012, 07:44 PM
In the original Xcom, Psionics are mental. I had two Psi troops and all I had to do was send out a hovertank as a scout, then mindcontrol the aliens and make them shoot each other. Didn't lose a soldier in 20 missions, took 4 alien bases without a casualty.

I don't use Psi anymore. Too easy.

I've decided what I'll do after buying the game on christmas.
My first game will be Iron-man mode, maybe normal maybe classis, I don't know.
The thing is, I'll be naming the soldiers after friends and acquaintances. The twist being:
Whenever one of them manages something heroic, I'll upload a screen with a description of the act. Whenever one of them gets a promotion, I'll upload a screen explaining why they deserver that promotion. Whenever one of them dies, I'll upload a screen giving a very accurate description of their deaths.
Not only will I be glad of the progress of my operatives, not only will I suffer upon their deaths. My friends will too, maybe even more so than me, since it'll be them making that progress or dying.

I've updated the list with the latest recruits.

So here's my plan as it stands. I'm a fairly poor XCOM player, and I lack dedication to a long game, especially when I'm losing. Thus, I'll be playing Classic Ironman. It'll be character building. Lord knows my character is under-constructed. Rookies can keep their default names and wear a helmet. When they gain Squaddie rank and are assigned a class they take off their helmets to be revealed an RPS personage in disguise, and get assigned their name from the list. I was planning to alternate between RPS writers and forum members.

I shall try to keep a record of deaths, and any special acts of heroism. I shall also try to take screenshots. Perhaps I shall make a point of screenshotting anyone who gains a rank higher than Sergeant. If it's one of you lot, feel free to suggest how you'd like me to customise their armour or appearance.

Oh, and I know this gets asked a million times, but what do you folks use for screenshot capture (preferably something I don't have to spend money on)?
