"I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike likes to say. And now that I’m grown up, it’s time for a much needed break.
I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people. Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a variety of disciplines, from code to art to marketing and PR – it’s been one big, rewarding learning experience. I’m confident that each project that is being built, whether at Epic, Chair, PCF, or Impossible will be top notch and will please gamers and critics alike."

Wot do you bet he'll do next? Go 'indie'?

Cliffy and Tanya were awesome as the faces of Epic.

Um, he just quit his job, it's not like he died.

He also didn't create any of those games, he was a level designer on UT. Was he a part of some good games? Sure. Do I care that he left EPIC? Nope, not at all. Why should I care? There are plenty of talented people there that will continue making games.

I'm sure plenty of people care that he quit for whatever reason, I don't and I wanted everyone to know just how indifferent I was on the subject. Why is this such a huge problem for you? It seems like certain posters around here feel compelled to post in every single thread that comes up, if for no other reason than to point out how little they care about the subject-matter. I'm guessing it's some form of OCD. Or maybe they just like seeing their postcount go up.

First, its a forum and everyone is entitled to voice their opinion, even if that opinion is "I'm not all that bothered by the departure of this man". It's just as valid as saying "I'm going to miss Cliffy B".

Second, although he was certainly the face of Epic for a long time and worked behind the scenes on their series, he's not a one man game machine so I don't see anything at Epic changing. They'll get a new face, or hopefully they wont, because faces of companies all ultimately get very annoying very quickly (Notch stand up).

Last, I enjoy Epic games as mindless entertainment and will continue to unless they start developing something like My Little Pony Stable Adventure.

Truth for sure. I do find it peculiar that they seem to believe people remotely care about their disinterest. Killing off post counts would be a positive move.

As regards CliffyB. I think it's all very PC master race to hate on the guy for some outspoken comments over the years, but if you've ever actually listened to the guy talk games and technology it's abundantly clear he knows what he's talking about within his domain.

My disinterest is as valid of a post as your interest. What makes you think people care about your interests anymore than my disinterests.

I also find it funny that my post, which simply said "meh?" was singled out rather than the one two posts above mine in which the poster states that he wants Cliffy B to be run over by a steam roller.

I don't dislike Cliff nor do I care about all that "PC master race" stuff, I am just very indifferent towards this news. I'd be interested if the news involved information about him starting a new game studio or something along those lines, but for now it simply states that he is taking a break and quit epic. So what's the big deal? What is there even to say other than "that sucks" or "meh" or "I'd like to see what he does next" or "he can go fuck himself!". I mean there isn't really a big opportunity for discussion here in the first place.

I thank him for bringing me Unreal and Unreal Tournament. I don't thank him for Unreal Tournament 2003/4 which was a bitter disappointment for me.

UT got me into online gaming.

Didn't he put down the PC recently? Which is an extremely odd thing to say considering his success lies with the PC. I don't rank him up there with the likes of Carmac or Molyneaux but still near the top in influential gaming faces.

I'm betting he goes indie. I expect a kickstarter page from his new studio pretty soon.

But good luck, Cliffy.

From Cliffy's recent Reddit AMA:

I was quoted recently on a Fortnite panel about the first Unreal and what a reboot might look like. Having really grown into a big Bethesda fan lately (Skyrim rocked my world) I couldn't help but wonder what a reboot of Unreal would be like if it was more "SciFi-Rim." Sure, there would be shooting involved, but exploration would almost be more important. Get back to that sense of wonder that the first game had. (Caves and castles and crashed ships are basically your dungeon instances, whereas the "overworld" is less intense.) Put it on a high end PC and prepare yourself for amazing visuals never before seen in real time.
As far as a new UT, it's hard to say. Shooters and their sequels are a tricky beast. Often you wind up upsetting your core whenever you make a sequel because sometimes you change things the users didn't want changed, or the users are so very in love with their memory of the original game that there's nothing you can do to live up to the first game. This happened with Counterstrike: Source, Quake 2, Unreal Tournament 2003, heck, even Halo 2.
(All that said, I do personally believe that UT3 suffered a bit from an identity crisis in regards to whether or not it was a PC or Console game.)
So if, when? I don't know, honestly. We're understaffed right now for all of the projects we've got going on so I can't say if or when it may happen. I do love that IP and do hope to return to Na Pali some day.

Fun CliffyB story (I think, it's been 10 years):
Back during the height of UT, CliffyB actually patrolled the fansites. It got to the point where you could basically mention his name once and actually expect a reply (like Bettlegeuse!).

And I think that basically sums him up perfectly. Yeah, the guy had a HUMONGOUS ego. But he also genuinely cared about the community and the fans. We might not have always agreed with him, but the guy's first goal was to make a game people would like (and even Gears of War was well received in console-land).

As the saying goes: Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

If you say "Sweet shazbot I'm ejaculating all over this awesome thing", he says "I don't want to live on this world anymore", and she says "I am indifferent", it doesn't matter. All of your opinions are equally valid and you are equally entitled to your opinions. EVEN if your opinion is based off of wrong, stupid, or bigoted information.

But for the purpose of a DISCUSSION, all three of those are meaningless. Because none of them really allow for any conversation beyond "Uhm... you have issues" to the first person.

We're all guilty of it sometimes, but you should ALWAYS try and make sure you actually have a talking point of worth in your post. Something that introduces a new aspect of the topic or comments on someone's previous post.
Saying "I am indifferent" does nothing other than inflate your post count.
Saying "+1" is almost as stupid
Saying "You are stupid" is, you guessed it, stupid (I'll give it least stupid of those options though).

And I think the internet is fostering this. Ironically, it is discouraging actual communication and encouraging people to "retweet" and "+1" posts, rather than actually SAY stuff.

Try to make a post that is under 10 characters.

I am not sure if the RPS forums do it (I assume they do), but it is a common way for people to make sure a post meets the requirements to get posted. I've never understood though since "10char" is only 6 characters, but I guess the linebreaks help and people usually say "yes" or "+1" which are 3 and 2 chars respectively.

This isn't a pub, it's an internet forum. When people are asking for technical help do others chime in with 'sorry mate haven't a clue?' posts?

No, but that's because in that type of thread, someone is asking for specific help. The only reason to answer is if you can offer help.

In this thread, it's an open topic, ergo all opinions are valid for being expressed.

I don't see how 'meh?' is a meaningful opinion. Sure it tells us a lot about Hyper, but that's nothing new.

Nah, you do. You are just pretending you don't because I was the one who said it, let's be honest here.
