View Full Version : Going out with a song

Simple question.
How many games can you think of that end with a song?
Bonus points if it involves a character singing in character.

Portals, and You Have to Cut Burn the Rope come to mind.

MGS2, I remember because it was some crappy jazz that was completely out of place
Dishonored, I remember because it was some crappy rap that was completely out of place
Modern Warfare, I remember because it fit in but it was still crappy - sung in character by a character(character being "Token Black Guy")
Final Fantasy 8, unless you want to count the credits overture. Technically sung by a character in character.
Final Fantasy X... maybe? There was a theme song, so I'm fairly sure they put it at the end, but I don't remember the ending almost at all.

The main theme of MGS2 was awesome.

Still, not right at the end, but Red Dead Redemption pretty much finishes with a song, and it's definitely some of the best use of music in a game.

Max Payne 2
Advent Rising
I think Prince of Persia Sands of Time also had a song at the end.

All games should have a song (well, assuming they do a good job of it)

BLands 2 starts with one at least,
Bastion has one maybe half the entire game
Saints Row 2 doesn't have original music, but that one fight with Power is excellent
and who could forget Limbo of the Lost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URcvdDtnM_0)

Ah, I thought you meant the song as Raiden as Snake are talking at the end, didn't even remember the jazz.

Lots of games end with music with vocals, but actual narrative songs?

Ooh, that's tough.

'Yes' did(or relic used it anyway) a song for homeworld called homeworld.

Jet Set Radio, with a medley of some of the game's songs, focusing on Hideki Naganuma's "Sweet Soul Brother".
IT IS NOW ON PC SO IT IS RELEVANT DON'T JUDGE ME

Iji, with Lifeforce's Further (not sure if it counts as the song wasn't recorded specifically for the game).

Bastion, with Darren Korb's magnificent "Setting Sail, Coming Home" <<-- I want mah bonus points!!

Beyond Good And Evil, with Cristophe Héral's "Home Sweet Home".

Mass Effect 1 with Sam Hulick and Jack Wall versioning Faunt's M4 Part II.

Mirror's Edge with Solar Fields being butchered horribly by Lisa Miskowsky.

And that's all I can think of (and google up) right now.

Most Sonic games since Sonic 3D Blast*. Includes both standard main themes and character-specific songs sung from the POV of the characters.

*the Saturn version, which featured the (horrible) "You're My Hero"

As far as I'm aware they actually did it for the game.

Speaking of MGS, didn't the first one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkqRENxckS0) end with a song too?

I don't quite remember, but I'm fairly sure To The Moon ended with Everything's Alright by Laura Shigihara. Might have been in-character, depending on your interpretation. She sings on behalf of both main characters.

Other than that my mind is drawing a blank although I know there were several Amiga games that did.

Hahaha, never seen that Limbo of the Lost ending. :D

Anyway, without spoiling too much, the song during the ending credits of Batman: Arkham City. Terrifying, tragic, and totally appropriate.

MGS 3 didn't end on a song. But I'm still going to post it any way. Why? Because it tecnically plays over the credits. Because awesome. Because every time I hear it I expect her to sing "Butt fuck you" and I'm wondering if anyone else hears it.

On topic, no Battle Isle fans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Jn6xN-dvl0)?

It is never inappropriate to bring up Jet Set.

That Arkham song is so good. Sums up their... relationship perfectly.

You mean the licensed tracks? They're available as user-made playlists if nothing else. There were indeed some cool song-picks for that soundtrack. Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Up Jumped The Devil" are particular favourites of mine. :)

Do console games count? If so, Parasite Eve had a pretty great ending theme.

Agreed. But the *one* song that always comes to my mind when thinking about Homeworld is the Adagio for Strings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPfY1D3O7C8). "No one's left... Everything's gone... Kharak is burning..." ;_;

Dishonored ended with a song. Not sure if it was specifically made for the game but it was bad enough to have been. It was the single worst part of the game IMO and it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the game.

Anyway it was not a rap song. More like Coldpay-like indie band of some sort...

It was "Swamped" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33gB8T7Ne4k) by Lacuna Coil. A nice song and a fitting end I'd say.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night also ended with a song called "I am the Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU0C1xHS8BI)". I kind of like the song itself, but not only has it nothing to do with the actual game, it also sounds completely different from the rest of the soundtrack.

And while it's not a video game, the first thing that came to my mind when I read this thread was "We'll Meet Again" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxrWz9XVvls) from Dr. Strangelove.

I had to look it up and was promptly mortified. It starts out fine but then indeed dissolves into a rap song. Why oh WHY didn't they just play the drunken whaler song from the E3 trailer?!

Have to agree with the comments on Arkham's ending. Definitely worth staying in the credits.

Bloody Dishonoured spoilers, I'm going back to my bunker. I just kidnapped Sokolov.

I wonder why Solar Fields wasn't advertised in the game. I doubted that some pop artist had could have made that ambient music, but I never discovered it until now. Thanks, you. Although I liked Lisa Minkowski version.

Not PC, but I believe Gears of War 2 (might have been 1 though) had a song being sung by a character in the game (Coletrain) and Gears 3 had a song created for its credit scroll by Ice T who also voiced a character in the game.

I generally hate cheesy ending songs a la Final Fantasy 8, with the exception of:
The Best is Yet to Come - Metal Gear Solid (already mentioned)
Another World Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q1JfD30ros)

I think the ending theme for Another World was an emotional moment for me because finishing the game nearly cost me my sanity (I was 9 at the time).

What else? Hmmm.... Tekken Tag Tournament (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0Z2Ix04Z0g) had some cool muzak at the end. I liked that.
