Hello all, I've been watching this (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01nln7d/Secret_Universe_The_Hidden_Life_of_the_Cell/) on the beeb and it occurred to me that I've never seen a game set within a human body, in a cell or an organ or a system or whatever. Then again, it's not like I've been looking. I know there's some level of Gears of War in a giant colon but that's basically a themed cave so I'm not counting that.

Anybody know of one? The idea can't be worse than SimAnt.

Obvious answer: Microcosm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcosm_%28video_game%29)

Even more obvious answer: Fantastic Voyage.

Not the Atari version, which was a kind of SHMUP. But the Amsoft/Amstrad CPC version... http://www.cpcwiki.eu/imgs/3/38/Fantastic_Voyage_Front_Covertape_%28Amsoft%29.jpg

Can't find any footage from it though.

There was that one voxel-based game where you fight a stylized virus infection with a nanobot using lasers, but I can't remember its name.

What was that animated movie where Chris Rock voiced some little guy who fought off viruses and bacteria and whatnot inside a human body? They could set it in that universe.

Haha, love that second screenshot. Thanks for dredging through your memory banks, guys. I guess there's the odd themed shooty thing from the nineties then, but has anybody ever tried to Sim City it up?

There was a cell shooter released on XBLA earlier this year, the name of which escapes me

There's also P3: Biotic which is a cell based arena shooter...

Earthworm Jim 2 for SNES:

In the third level, "The Villi People," the player must guide Jim, defenseless in the disguise of a blind cave salamander, through intestinal passages, while avoiding exploding sheep and hazards embedded in the floor and walls.

ALSO, Ocarina of Time: Jabu Jabu aka the main reason I haven't replayed that game more times.

Within-Person Shooters?

I imagined a game where you control the bodily functions of a man-shooting-man, probably in slow motion. Raise the arm! Prepare muscles to apply pressure on the trigger with the finger! A wound? Send platelets to fix it up!

Cell: emergence (http://www.newlifeinteractive.com/games/cell/)? Which, I seem to recall, I picked up recently in some bundle or other but have yet to play.

Holy crap. An RTS in this setting would own bones.

Locomalito has Viriax (http://www.locomalito.com/viriax.php). And -- not a shooter, but -- there's the Trauma Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trauma_Center_(series)) series on the DS. And Bowser's Inside Story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowser%27s_Inside_Story), too.

I'm sure I read something about a therapy-intended game where the player controlled chemotherapy molecules to blow up cancer cells, or something. Give the patient a feeling of control over their treatment.

A bit of a shameless plug, but I worked on MicroBot (http://www.ea.com/microbot/intro), which also takes on the "nanobots inside someone's body" theme. Check it out :)

Maybe one day they'll make a game based on this :

Oh man, my mum and aunt bought me those books when I was a kid. That stuff got me into the medical world. It has an awful lot to answer for.

There was also a shooter from 1999 where you played a little ship flying around blowing up bacteria or something in a first person perspective. Don't remember what it was called though.

Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon!
Hooray for obscure and terrible SNES games!
