Perhaps the first game this year that has lived up to the hype surrounding it.

I LOVE IT.

I love the music.

I love the pace.

I like the fact my monitor appears to be gently twisting on my desk.

It's not for those easily offended.

It's not for those who get motion sickness easily.

You will get a contact high if you're susceptible to such things.

So what are the objectives? Just killing people or are you doing something like robbing a bank? Can you do a no-kill run through, or is that missing the point?

Patrick Swayze
23-10-2012, 09:28 PM
Gameplay wise it is PURELY about killing. Killing fast. Killing noisy. Killing quiet. Killing efficiently. Killing. Lots of killing.

Cooper

It's a glouriously garish mix of twitch-based action, puzzle and pseudo retro ultra-violence.

I fucking adore it.

It is good fun though.

Such an amazing soundtrack, god damn.

Found myself zoning out listening while watching guard routines a few times... also, who would have thought exposure was a bad thing in miami?

Just saw that the alienware option is supposed to control pc case lighting in case the screen borders weren't enough for you.

I love the game as much as the next guy. And I find that there are nearly as many ways to kill a guard as in Dishonored.

However, these boss fights are a true bitch! That prank caller boss ist just horrendous. He doesn't move like any other enemies, but rather keeps his distance relative to you, even though you're trying to get away. completely unpredictable, made me ragequit a few times.

Jockie
24-10-2012, 01:42 AM
It's rather awesome, I just played it for 5 hours straight, finished it and re-did a bunch of the early levels. I still have no idea how flexibility works.

I may end up trying to get the A+ on every level achievement, just got my first one and I felt like a total badass, smashing enemies with a sledgehammer, throwing it blind as I ran around a corner to take out the shotgun mob, smashing his face into the carpet, taking his shotgun to clear the room to the north out, before hiding back in the corridor with the hammer to take out the guys rushing in.

My eyes hurt, but I have a big grin on my face.

It reminds me a little of Madness, the old flash game on Newgrounds. In it, you could only really survive each level's wave of enemies by knowing how and when they'd arrive, and reacting quickly and accurately. It was tough and a little sloppy, but the effect of success was that you'd feel like you'd pulled off something out of an action movie, not at all unlike Jockie's example. Hotline is similarly a game about "pulling it off", and similarly exciting when you do.

Well, not for me then :(

Hold off for the demo, it might not be that bad (the screen kind of sways a little bit as a sort of psychedelic effect).

Speaking of which, I think the game will start racking up the sales once the demo is released, it's just insanely compulsive and unputdownable during a first playthrough.

2-3 hours probably, maybe less if you're amazing. There's plenty of replayability in score-chasing and unlocks though.

Jockie

The frog is great for scorechasing! I quite like the dog, because I hate the dogs, The horse is pretty useful too, the quick executions (I forget the animal) is great if you are insane and want to go for a no-weapons run

I did completed a few levels using only fists and that tiger mask and it change a lot of ways of how you engage the enemies, especially those who wield firearms but I'm curious about why I didn't get the achievement for beating chapter 5 barehanded, maybe it's bugged or something. Nonetheless I might try it again with other masks to see how different it can be.

I should probably get this and play it now before my new monitor comes. Playing this on 21.5 inch screen is likely to attract the interest, and horror and sadness, of my wife whereas I can block her vision playing on a 15".

Played through the first few chapters, and replayed the latter of howevermany enough to explore the scoring system and get an A+. It felt damn good not only to even beat the mission (this game is hard, or maybe I'm just slow) but to get top marks when I finally did.

This game has an incredibly soundtrack. I'm drawing blanks on any other game that might top it... The only one that comes close for me is VVVVVV.

you can technically sneak around and evade enemies in loaded. I was exaggerating a bit by calling this game a rip-off btw.

I haven't gained a single achievement yet and I'm about half way through the game. I know I've met criteria for quite a few, I guess it's just part of the whole "steam might not work" thing at the start.

Just went back to the game earlier today... Is there really no way of continuing your game without going into chapter select and replaying the last chapter you finished? The only other thing I can see if hitting Start Game, and that just leads to a new game :/

Perturbator on bandcamp even has a shot of Pris in it, it's that much of a near-homage.

It reminded me a lot of Escape from New York's soundtrack too. Which is definitely no bad thing.

To me those games look more like Smash TV than Hotline Miami. HM is not an arena shooter at all. My closest comparison is to a platformer like N or VVVVVV. It's not a platform game, but it shares the timing, precision, quick deaths and instant restarts. One slip up and you're dead, but you want to keep trying over and over because dying is only a momentary pause.

Also, anyone been playing this on a laptop or low spec PC? I thought it would be perfect for my laptop (which can handle some 3D games and all the 2D indie games I've tried), but it's too slow to be playable. I can't see any options or config files, but maybe someone's found a setting I can force in my graphics drivers.

- steam overlay (and achievements...for what they're worth) don't seem to work even if I select YES when prompted in-game.

Any clues?

*Spoilers*

After my first run through I dedicated myself to finding all the secrets, it's really easy with the Owl mask on. Figured out the password and accessed the computer at the end. You get more dialogue with those two cleaners at the end. Something about being nationalists and sorting out the country. I've yet to get all the masks, can't find two near the end, crocodile and rat I think. They seem to be tied to high scores. Phil the Fish mask doesn't seem to do anything. The mask description is 'French Translation' but nothing changes. All I can say is...what a game.

Kinda yeah, you need to be looking for these really tiny purple pixels that have a white dot in the middle of them. If you wear the Owl mask then they will hover and become slightly more obvious to see. Same applies for the hidden masks too I believe. Just found the Rat mask, pretty neat. That Alligator/Crocodile mask is nowhere to be seen though. Stumped.

Can you ever turn your crosshair quickly and accurately enough with a controller in order to play the game competently without some sort of auto aim? I already get into trouble dealing with multiple enemies at once if I'm not waiting for them to stupidly walk through the door I'm hiding next to with a bat and I have no issues with kb+m at all.

That's my favourite level. Which section is the 4th? I think you can enter them in any order.

For Crackdown, the police will kill the remaining mobsters if you aren't quick enough, you don't have to kill them all. Just back off when they kick down the door, before they reach the sniper corridor. As long as you're not crossing a window at the same time as the laser beam you can get past fine.

Bleekill
27-10-2012, 08:40 PM
@Steph Just evade the cops, don't fight them. I usually just sneak by the windows when they bust in, then head for the exit. You will have to pass one cop down stars to get to the car, just make sure he's not facing you when you run by him.

Yeah the violence is amazing. It's so detailed and over the top. The first time I gutshot an enemy, he fell over clutching his stomach and kicking his legs. Then a geyser of blood shot out of his wound so hard that it knocked his hands away and he died instantly. Hilarious. I also like the mercy kills when they are crawling away.

It also feels badass to use a human shield and clear a whole level with him, then find out he's still alive somehow. *SNAP*

I think one reason the violence works so well is because there's no screaming or gurgling or anything, which I've noticed games tend to focus on when they're trying to be visceral. The silence is much more powerful.

I can think of plenty of examples (Miike's Audition comes to mind) where the sound design makes a particular sequence disturbing in ways it wouldn't otherwise be.

It makes me happy to see you all working out how to get past certain levels, truly a mark of a great game. It's been one of the few games lately where I've really had to work at being good. I've proudly unlocked/found everything now. There is story DLC on the way which I'm rather excited about. http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/27/hotline-miami-gets-patche-plus-story-dlc-in-the-works/

Chapter Nine - Crackdown

Ok, I know that it's me but...I'm stuck in this chapter and I just can't get past the police, it's impossible.

They don't die, you can't cross the laser beam and I can't find another exit.
Am I missing somethin?

Kill the guy in the bathroom last, run immediately to the windows with the sniper, then follow the laser all the way to the last window, wait for it to go back, run downstairs

Got my first A+ on the mission with the Phone Hom boss. Felt so good seeing that A+ slam onto the screen.

I was able to kill everyone that needed killin' from my starting position by making as much noise as possible. When the police burst in, the exit stairs were right next to me.

Of course, your way is better if you want more points.

It felt like being stuck in an ultra-violent, David Lynch film.

Any tips for the final boss? The panthers are fairly easy to get past, and the blonde barely manages to finish her lines before I floor her. Problem is I only have time to throw one knife before the guy machineguns me.

Stand right up against him. Like any other gun wielding enemy in the game he will not be able to hit you because the gun goes through your body.

Thanks. What a great little game! I'm not normally one for watching speedruns, but in the case of Hotline Miami I'd make an exception.

There's a computer asking for a password, is it possible to obtain it from the two crazy gentlemen?

I actually thought this was a glitch until I figured out that you had to abuse it to even beat the game.

You don't. It's very much doable without the glitch.

Run behind the fountains, they block his bullets. Pop out and throw a knife while he's reloading.

Spoilers:

When you defeat the blonde, don't finish her. Let her crawl around until she reaches the first fountain. Meanwhile gather 2 knives and drop them behind that fountain. Finish her and 2-shot the boss while she's reloading.

I don't know, but I would guess that it's what you're collecting secret letters for. Press Esc, select puzzle and see what letters you have. If you've found enough you might be able to guess the words, then try that for the password.

I could be totally wrong though.

Hey, you're right! There's a little flashing purple dot to collect in every level (don't think they flash unless you've got the Owl mask on) which gives you a letter for the password.

This thing is just what was ordered at the moment. Moody, short, great soundtrack, gobs of atmosphere, and just tough enough. Can't recommend it enough. Everything about it feels ridiculously smooth (and I've had precious few bugs - couple of crashes to desktop).

Don't think I'm very good at stealthing it though. I seem to be quite good at busting in through the door and batterin' people. Sometimes.

Definitely can't recommend it enough. If you think it's too hard, try it anyway. I'm not sharp by any means and I find a way to get through. Usually.

Completely agree, I am not usually good at precision games like this but its so easy to restart and when you clear a floor you feel like a total bad ass

It's not a stealth game; it makes it very clear that recklessness is a powerful tool - it even calls you a coward if the level is played too conservatively.

Yeah, I've noticed that I'm better off honing my timing so I can bail in and bludgeon at the best time, than sit around and wait for someone to get close enough to clobber on the QT.

Slamming a door on someone and than hammering another two is deeply satisfying.

It was kind of an odd moment when I realised the 'exposure' note was a bonus, not a penalty. Anti-stealth is a brilliant genre.

What's the trick with taking out the boss' henchwoman? The panthers are easy (well, they're easy to kill in a cheap fashion), but if I get close she cuts me down, and if I keep my distance she hits me with a throwing knife (or is it a poison dart? Sometimes I seem to slow down before I die).

Even in a game I love this much, I still fucking hate boss battles.

Drake Sigar

If you move too near her while battling the panthers (this invisible do-not-cross line is at the top of the fountains) she'll throw a lethal knife, but move too far away and you'll have a hard time lining up a throw when it's her turn to attack. I think throw weapons also lose their power over long distances and just fall to the ground.

I also jumped onto the bandwagon now. Played through the tutorial and the first two missions, but hat SERIOUS slowdown pretty fast. Then found out it has to do with my wireless XBox-pad which has it's receiver plugged in but was switched off. Need to disable the pad for the game somehow, don't want to plug in and out each time I'm playing HM.

If you like Hotline Miami, play Nitronic Rush (http://nitronic-rush.com/)

HLM was compared to a racing game elsewhere, and that's apt enough. Finding the best racing lines, being both exacting and responsive.

Except HLM is so much more immediate. Nitronic Rush has a very, very similar feel to HLM. Instant restarts, twitchy controls. Finding the most efficient route through a level in a mix of balletic movement and forceful spurts. The 'zone' of the two games feel very similar.

The music in this game is amazing.
The music in the Steam version of this game can be found as .ogg files in the steam folder.
Android phones support .ogg files, indeed that's the default format for ringtones.
Free software such as Audacity can be used to take excerpts from ogg files.
I now have a "perturbator from Hotline Miami" ringtone.

(it's up on Soundcloud too: http://soundcloud.com/devolverdigital/sets/hotline-miami-official but not to download yet, I'll give em some money when it is, because why not)
