BFG work pushed the Rage tools, but Real Soon Now. I hope. Sigh. I think we have made poor decisions on this all year. (https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/260529465636040704)

id Studio was supposed to ship with the game, but, well, fuckin' Zenimax, eh? It's supposed to be a very simple and efficient SDK. Hopefully good things will come out of it. On the other hand (http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Editorial/John-Carmack-Interview-GPU-Race-Intel-Graphics-Ray-Tracing-Voxels-and-more/Transcr?page=1):

"For the user community, all of our tools are only available in the 64 bit version. We ship the 32 bit version that we treat as a sort of console platform. We will be releasing the 64 bit version after the fact, but honestly there is going to be a limit to what people can do with it because there is so much infrastructure that goes into building a MegaTextured world. I suspect that there will be one or two people who go through the trouble to figure out how to really build a MegaTextured world, or do some of the stamping effects on there. Mostly it will be for changing game play stuff. You can set up new layers, build a new multi-player layout, and build a nightmare difficulty level going through it. Unfortunately, there is a terabyte of source art that goes into building the game and we are certainly not going to be pushing all that out for download."

Still waiting for the Keith Flint RAGE DLC (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-19-rage-the-scorchers-rating-suggests-dlc-for-rage-inbound)! My unrealistic expectation is that it's going to be packaged into the mod tools, I think the UE3 SDK comes with something like this.

How can those 128x128 equivalent textures take up a terabyte of storage?:p
I love carmack but the rage engine is a turd, never could get rid of the texture lod swapping. Made the whole thing pointless.

Huge kudos for bringing out dev tools though, even though it's very late.
Beats dice and those other greedy clowns who stopped bothering.

No Doom 4? *sigh*

On a side note Carmack's twitter is excellent

Theoretically it's a good idea, but I don't know if the tech is really there to let it shine. Rage's terrain looked fantastic, as did the characters, but pretty much nothing else did.

Rage did look pretty lovely in places, but agreed it was nasty up close. I think Doom 4 could look gorgeous if they nail it this time though.

rage was one of the few FPS games that favored smoothness and responsiveness over graphics

and ended up with amazing graphics too

Until you did a swift turn-around.

i was one of the lucky ones I guess. took about 2 or 3 frames from the textures to go from low to high res after a 180

most high-end games cut the framerate and have more pop in than that anyways

I really don't think there's a market for Doom 4 nowodays. Well not without drastically altering the gameplay.

But the biggest shooter ever is a run and gun affair.

learn to compress ffs.

His whole premise is that texture compression is a necessary evil. He developed the MegaTexture tech precisely to remove the need for compressing. Artists love it, because they can forget about limits.

Are you seriously comparing Call of Duty to Doom?

learn to compress ffs.
I think that's already compressed, isn't it? Just with lossless compression, as opposed to what you see in-game.
