View Full Version : Sum up a complex game in 10 words or less

I've been playing XCOM, and as I have, I've found I have a lot of trouble explaining the game to friends who are unfamiliar with it (pretty much everyone). My problem is that I take too many words to explain it, and by the time I'm done they still don't have a good idea of how it plays.

My challenge for you RPSers is to sum up a complex game in 10 words or less that give insight to the experience, or at least hook a person so you can go into more detail. For instance:

XCOM: "Turn-based Rainbow Six".

Probably not the most informative example, but it at least gives them an idea of what it's like.

It's one thing to sum up something complex in simplified terms, but 10 words or less is rather a harsh and needless restriction, unless you're explaining it to a dog.

For instance, one could go with - A strategy game with a world map overview and base management, set during an alien invasion of earth, during which you field teams of troops in turn-based tactical missions. Well over 10 words and that's as basic as I could manage, which hardly explains anything regarding how you actually play it.

Link them a youtube video.

This never works. I don't think any 10 word sentence could encompass the awesomeness in Mount & Blade or DayZ. I probably would have avoided those games if just given an imprecise sound bite.

I don't think it should exactly tell you everything about it, but more give insight to what it "feels" like to play the game. It's a hook to get others interested, not define the game entirely.

I actually explained XCOM to a friend similarly to the way you explained it Memph, and they were still a bit hazy. Also its a bit difficult to give a youtube link to someone in person.

Minecraft: Punch trees, build anything, king of everything, holy shit creepers!
SWAT 4: Realistic balistics, environments and circunstances, Tazer old ladies who resist.
Battlefield 3: Fly jet, jump out, open parachute at 5 feet, survive.
Bookworm Adventures: Defeat fairytale characters with rude words, giggle.
Bloodbowl: Train the best team ever, have them die by chance.
Solium Infernum: Betray closest friends, it's too late, they already killed you.
Batman Arkham City: Listen to muscled men complain about weather, then punch them.

that's my point: a 10 word sentence can't describe the essence of these games.

I mean, look at the wiki intro of the MGS page:

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth action video game directed by Hideo Kojima... The game featured cinematic cutscenes rendered using the in-game engine and graphics, as well as voice acting in numerous codec sequences.

really? c'mon

Natural selection 2 : Teambased resource managment zone control fps, lights out? OH SHIT!

OP: using other games is cheating since they in themselves could be explained in ten or more words.
@memph: that is the whole point of the game, seeing how much you can say in ten words while doing the game justice. It's a writing exercise.

For most part, I'd say it is. however, that makes it ever more intense when the action gets going.

Dwarf Fortress: Read manual, stare at symbols, give up and cry.

Dark Souls: You fight, you kill, you die, you rage, you cry.
My favourite so far, if it didn't have "you rage" or maybe "you kill" it'd be downright musical. Like "you fight, you die, you rage, you cry."

Mount & Blade: Game of Thrones minus the nudity.
Witcher: sex, violence and consequences.
Metal Gear: Snake Plissken hiding in boxes before fighting increasingly crazy bosses.
Frozen Synapse: chess with guns with 20 people simultaneously.

Battlefield Bad Company 2: Maintain the Formation, Dont' Fall Back!

The design itself truly rewards those play in team, coordinating with teammates tactically. You dont even need to prep with your teammates assigned to you each round randomly by computer. Experienced BC2 players will know what to do in the game. In one such Rush round in Valparaiso, me alongside with other attacker teammates formed such an offensive line to steadily advance down slope for the first pairs of m-comm. The defenders in that round were not coordinating as well as we do, and they heroically yet recklessly tried to break our line, and of course they all failed. Every time they tried to charge at us one by one they were outgunned. That's how we managed to eventually win that round.

True, this isn't very expressive, but it sure is fun to play at. I'm not going to count the game title in the 10-word count, because then using the whole title would take up half the available space.

XCOM:

Aliens appear. Squad up, play on Classic Ironman, die. Lots.

Dishonored:

Whalepunk assassin wreaks (possibly) pacifistic vengeance on kidnappers. Possessed heart.

Hotline Miami:

Quickly murder guys as worse guy in rubber chicken mask.

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl: Ask Around To Explore Your New Path

Pretty strange to "ask around" in a shooter, huh, but Stalker is exactly this kind of action game. This is ARPG. Dont just shoot, shoot, shoot. Try to maintain friendly terms with as many people as possible and efforts will pay off. You can even try to "reason" will some government military (to those who haven't played, you will know once you play, soon enough). But of course, take side at the right moment to shoot on the other side may also work for you, depending on your style. But remember, without friends, you are not gonna survive in the ZONE for a day.

And if life is a game, this rule applies as well.

Solve fiendish puzzles in a dungeon, spiders are bloody terrifying.
Turn cards on their side to trigger incomprehensible rules.
Play bejewelled with ogres and minotaurs.

One of the Dragon Ages? I haven't played either, but I recall a discussion on these forums about the Blood Mages(?) being crazy.

Here's some (possibly) cryptic ones:

Ah, haven't played that yet (but I have it on steam, was in some bundle some time). Deadly Premonition absolutely reminded me on Twin Peaks, hence the connection with David Lynch.
