I use GMail in Chrome, and I've had notifications enabled for a long time, so every time a mail is received, a nice little box pops up to inform me about a mailing list message or any other automated sender.

Whenever an actual person is sending me something, I get absolutely nothing. Zilch. Any idea why it would behave like that?

C'mon, 34 views and not even a comforting pat on the shoulder?

You can at least tell me if I'm the only one in the world dealing with this obnoxious problem.

You're the only person in the world that actually uses email notifications.

Simple Checker for Gmail (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/simple-mail-checker-for-g/kdnecmelaimlfdenllncbigiljiaaimo) is what I use. Far from perfect but does notifications.

Where did the notification normally happen? On any chrome window?

Never have used it nor noticed it having that function.

Gtalk notifies me of new gmail along with my phone and tablet. Triple notification!

Desktop notification. Yes, they exist but not many apps use them.

I guess that explains it :P

In one of the screen corners (I think you can pick the one you want it to use). It's a popup not unlike the ones Windows puts out, works as long as you have GMail open in a tab in Chrome. Looks a bit like this:

Are the notifications enabled for all mail or only "important" items? (Settings -> General -> Desktop Notifications)

Edit: That would be Settings in GMail, not Chrome.

Did you see my solution, alms? It's not text but a hyperlink to a chrome plugin.

I picked this option:

New mail notifications on - Notify me when any new message arrives in my inbox
but the other makes no difference.

edit: actually it makes a difference - I'm getting no notifications at all now.

Yes, but I'd like to avoid extension bloating (I'm already using too many) especially since the feature is there in the first place.

Hmmm... An interesting wrinkle I've just discovered - the notifications only seem to display when a new email arrives. If I receive an email that is a reply to one I've originally sent, or a reply to a reply, no notification is displayed. Methinks a third-party plugin/extension/what-have-you might be the best way to proceed.

That's weird, it works for me with forum notifications - although those might not be true replies.
