AMD graphics drivers for Linux are also a bit pants. I can't imagine hybrid crossfire makes it any better, especially considering it's quite bad even on Windows. Only recently got frame pacing...

Optimus and Linux is never a combination I would recommend.

If HD Graphics 4XXX isn't good enough, then you could always go Iris Pro 5200. Only comes with expensive CPUs, but then a mobile Core i7...

I'd recommend a GTX 970 instead of the 980. Almost as powerful, MUCH cheaper.

Google claims that error code has something to do with Windows Firewall. Which is a bit odd when you're fiddling with your password, but could make sense with regard to the slow downloads.

Your graphics card is probably either a 7750 or 7770 (the specs just quote the 7700 subfamily). The 7770 is equivalent to the R7 250X. There are plenty of upgrades available, the minimum to be worth...

I don't think the price will drop until AMD releases something new or cuts their prices even more (which also seems unlikely).

AMD cut the prices of their R9 290 and 290X, which are the most directly affected cards. The rest of the lineup has only seen minor pricing adjustments.

A 280X at 220 is pretty crazy when a GTX 970 is available for 250.

Unfortunately Nvidia hasn't released a GTX 960 yet, which would fit your budget better and really shake things up in that...

The size of the 970 depends on which model you buy. The smaller ones are going to be similar in size to the GTX 560 she has now.

Yeah the R9 280 would be fine. Same goes for the similarly priced GTX 760. The GTX 960 should be significantly faster while costing perhaps around the same. But again, that is not confirmed.

Unless they go with a 192-bit memory interface, in that case 3GB is natural (1GB for each 64-bit controller). The 970 and 980 have a 256-bit memory interface, the 750 Ti and 750 have a 128-bit memory...

Well that entirely depends which R7 200 card you have. The 265 is only a little weaker, while a 240 is pretty crappy.
