I've beat it a few times now.

Best results for me seem to come from taking out the missile launcher and laser with boarders/bombs as quickly as possible then grinding out the first stage. Then...

"Z1"-ed myself out for next season. Z denotes missing in action and the 1 shows I'm expected to be back in one season...
