I found that getting the latest version included a launcher. It added the idea of profiles, allowing you to create a profile that ran 1.5.2, which it would then download on demand for you.

I'm at the stage where the multiplayer is pretty much working, so if you ever want to dip in for a quick test, come find me on IRC. You can now modify the world on the server too.
