Really going back a few years (yikes, 1997 apparently), Crush Deluxe was a great game stymied by some balancing and execution flaws. Basically SpeedBall vs BloodBowl played in 1v1v1 turn-based...

Football Manager, on the biggest database your PC can handle, for 20+ years.
Going through all the stats/results and life stories of the players who become staff and how they have travelled...
The one that immediately springs to mind is Goal Line Blitz Classic (http://glb.warriorgeneral.com/), although you aren't limited to one player, and the GM role of a team is player held as well.
TB has also mentioned in a few recent videos/Twitter statements, that it was difficult to get review code pre-release without signing a branded "don't say anything bad" deal. so more than usual,...
The Great British Bake Off in a vaguely Cook, Serve, Delicious style.

Assuming wikipedia is correct, he turned 30 earlier this week.
Unofficially passed the 100 mark during this sale. 98 I own, and a handful in inventory. Pretty much the only ones I've yet to play are sequels (Geneforge mostly).
Age of Wonders Trilogy
Din's Curse DLC
Nethergate : Resurrection
Dipped into Reus and Hero Siege already, Reus is a touch more fast paced than I was expecting, or maybe...
I don't really understand the point of the teams thing. Is it just a way to make 80% of the userbase sad that they aren't getting into a "you have a tiny chance of three free games" lottery?

I'm not quite sure it's exactly what you are describing, but Hinterland (it's on Steam) has town building while trying to pacify the local npc/monster groups. It's pretty basic, kinda ugly, and not...

It's been on sale before, but I'm an idiot and missed it, so I'll have my eyes open for Fallen Enchantress. Other than that, nothing springs to mind.

Just had a swift blast at Super Laser Racer for the first time in ages, and improved a couple of my lap times to keep me near the top of most of the online leaderboards. Still useless at one of the...

Finally got my first win, Kestrel A with Burst Laser mk II AND III, Artemis and Heavy Ion. Defense I and Attack II drones. Crew was 6 humans and a pair of Mantis. Max teleporter, msx weapons, 7...
You just found a person who remembers Hyperspeed at least. Spent so much time at a friends house playing this on his much-better-than-mine PC that I basically lived there one summer.

This is a great game, that allows incredible stories to happen.
My personal favorite so far was accidentally bumping into the Rock ship unlocking quest, which led me into a dead end at the edge of...

Then, sadly, I'm afraid I can't tell you what won.
Total agreement with Tritagonist above about Transport Tycoon AI, and another old one that was just abysmal, Ascendancy. A wonderful 4x that was just hopelessly crippled by it's AI.
Just checked the first post and, no-one has mentioned Space Pirates and Zombies yet? Odd.

Didn't spot the wild west mention in an earlier post, having now seen it, there is the Westward series of games, which possibly aren't quite what the poster was asking about, but are definitely worth...

Much agreement here, picked Hinterland up in the xmas Steam sale, and was very impressed with the concept, if not quite so much with the execution.
Not a PC one, but on Link's Awakening (Gameboy), I was stuck in dungeon 6(?) for literally MONTHS before I realised the floor tiles in one room that turned and pointed to a wall meant that the wall...
