I'm really enjoying Natural Selection 2, and I don't even really like online FPS
I would also recommend taking the duvet to the couch and watching a box set instead.
If you're set on a PC game.. something slower. Football Manager springs to mind, or Crusader Kings 2.
Don't worry, you haven't really been spoiled.
How are you getting on with IJ? I read it a couple of years ago- i found it much easier to read on an e-reader which makes all the jumping back and forth less of an ordeal, and is also just lighter...

I would like to add Defense Grid the tower defense game.
It is a puzzle game essentially, with a good story. It doesn't really include crafting, but requires skilled building and upgrading.
I've not read Hydrogen Sonata yet, but personally I think reading Consider Phlebas and Look to Windward provides the perfect introduction to the Culture universe.

Sounds awesome - the one thing to remember with running a home server is that it's worth taking the time to cable it up to your router, rather than try to run it wirelessly.
