What's the value of buying Space Marine? Presumably just the code and art and stuff, cause they'd need a separate license from Games Workshop to actually publish anything WH40K related.

Indeed. They're the only ones doing interesting things with gameplay, while CRPGs are largely stuck with simplified D&D derivatives.
They don't even capture the best of D&D. I highly recommend...

The trouble is that the big names have already started tackling the problem with always-online DRM, while lying and pretending that it's not really DRM. It's been quite effective for them.

Any ARPG, any MMO solo, and Just Cause 2 on easy difficulty. These all work particularly well when your brain is mostly engaged with something else.
