I was a regional olympic* at physics (mechanics and optics) because I liked it but a fail at proper math (analytical) because I hated it. Why? Because some things simply aren't appealing. You can't ever motivate enough a pupil to learn advanced integrals/derivations just for the immaterial and spurious reason of personal improvement, believe me.

*I don't know if you have this scholar system, it's some sort of scholar contest present in europe at gymnasium and high school level.

Therefore any method of getting the kids trough things they might not like but are needed (ABC of physics, at least), is welcomed, in my opinion.
