What's with people lately wanting melee weapons in a FPS? That's right, First Person SHOOTER !
Really, go spend some money on Chivaliry and enjoy that.

This. No melee, no crossbows, no nothing. This is WWII with lasers and victory techno, and I like it just fine as it is.

Especially the no crossbows part, the only time I see melee working in a game like this is with the hulking space marine theme of WH40k or similar.

But as for WW2, there were a couple of dudes doing crazy shit with swords in WW2 :P

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Churchill though he apparently used a longbow as well.

Yeah, I knew about him. The only verified kill with a longbow during WWII. The sword was mostly because he felt that an officer should always carry his sword. But the man was batshit crazy. Now that I come to think of it, a lot of the British officers, especially those in special forces, were. Eccentrics and misfits, who managed, mostly due to the public school system, to convince someone to give them a private army in a theatre of operations where senior officers couldn't watch closely, such as Sahara or Burma.

Anyway, they are rebalancing the ESFs, and again they look for inspiration to WWII. Firstly, they will change AB fuel tanks, so you can spend Cert Points on them for greater capacity, refueling speed, boost to either speed of afterburner, etc. Second, and most important there will be wing-mounted guns, while toning down the A2AM. The goal being wing-mounted guns for dogfights, A2AM for gals and liberators.

Finally, melee is working just fine. Well, not exactly fine (no collision), but there are some intense knife fights, and that's all there should be.

definitely dont mean we should have all melee soldiers, that would be wierdly unnecessary, but a close combat weapon that is silent, is always good.

I vote some kind of vibroblade lightsabery type thing for us. TR can have a mini chainsaw (like in Fallout, the Ripper) and NC can have a repulsor or something. they seem to be going more for close combat than any other side.

Or like Unreal Tournaments melee weapon. a jackhammer.

A knife is a knife mechanically - but a cooler looking vibroblade-style knife (or some other such model) would be cool. Just more Vanu.

    I want bayonets :]

But the melee weapon argument is that as armour becomes highly advanced, traditional firearms become less useful against it and powered melee weapons become more effective. But PS2 is clearly nowhere near this stage as small firearms are still very effective.

All I was meaning with the weapons before was a simple new knife skin, nothing more than that.

It's not about wading in with a sword, for me it's about having faction flavour in every place possible. And a basic pointy combat knife is an easy place you can drop in some flavour without having to rebalance anything or make new animations or whatnot. Just a reskin of the knife to make it look cool/exotic/alien.

Melee should just be cosmetic items, same functionality as the knife but you could by different looks. ESF balance changes? Should be good.

I don't get your complaints, the Vanu knife already is a powered vibroblade of sorts, you know. In PS1 it was a weapon like any other (you had to switch to it to use it, no COD-like melee attack key), and secondary fire was activating/deactivating power. When powered, the knife did more damage, but hummed audibly.

Yeah, melee doesn't need any more mechanics. They have clearly left it open to make new skins etc, but the knives are also already faction-flavoured. The TR one is already a mini chainsaw, NC have a Mag-Cutter (I imagine them being used to open cardboard boxes) and our VS one is a sort of leaf-shaped thing called a Force Blade.

It should probably glow blue when smurfs are near, like Sting (the dagger, not the musician).
