SNG (Saturday Night Gaming): SEASON TWO Commences 7th November
Hello, hello, hello!
I'm Krathor, one of the general mods for Game Clubs And General Sociability Ok, along with an officer in quite a few of the guilds and clans that play host to RPS communities. I'm also responsible for the monthly RPS Community Update that's been running since April. In fact, many of you have probably seen yourselves (or the games you play) in it.
As part of my time with the Guild Wars 2 crowd, we started Saturday Night Gaming. First officially formed just over a year ago, it was a dedicated night when the community would play something other than Guild Wars 2. It was a lot of fun and, in the name of togetherness, is definitely something that deserves to have the entire community involved.
What's Going On Then?
Every week, the we all pick a game and then folks pile onto Mumble (details here) at 8PM British (that's 7PM GMT during summer, 8PM GMT during winter) to play together and have fun. If you're confused about the times, see here to get a relative feel for it compared to wherever you are now.
It's a good way for folks who would usually stick to a single game to meet other people, alongside experiencing something new. Sessions will only last about two hours, although I'm sure some people will be around before the regular starting time, as well as staying after.
The important thing is that everyone feels welcome to join, and we keep it accessible as possible.
How Do You Pick Games?
Historically, this is something that we struggled with in GW2; games were picked pretty arbitrarily based on what folks fancied playing. As this is more open to the wider community, it's time we implement a structure:
- Ideally the game should be free, or close to free. Examples include small free-to-play MMOs (no huge downloads), free weekends on Steam, StarCraft II Arcade, bundle games, titles folks commonly have in their libraries etc. Of course, I'm sure if you don't own a particular title there's always a chance someone will offer you a code in this here thread.
- It should have the capacity for eight or more players to play together (either co-op or competitively). There's always the opportunity for people to split off into two separate lobbies, for example. However, in general, the bigger the better.
- It should be easy to pick up and play. Of course people are welcome to play with each other at any time, as we only have a few hours on the Saturday dedicated to this, the game should be simple to learn. Good examples that we've done in the past are Chivalry, Killing Floor and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
- This doesn't mean that we should shy away from any slightly complex game, especially if it meets the other requirements. A good example would be Terraria, which can be played over a couple of weeks.
This thread is always open to suggestions, and generally we'll go with the one most people agree on/what seems like a good fit for shenanigans.
Games should be announced in the thread (including the title getting updated) every Wednesday, to give enough time for folks to prepare. This means that the period from the Saturday to Wednesday should be used for suggestions, with the remainder of the time spent gearing up for the Saturday.
How Long Will This Go On For?
This pilot will begin on Saturday 8th August, and run every week until Saturday 3rd October. Ultimately, if it's successful, it could run indefinitely. I want to get to the stage where it just becomes a staple of the community, where people know they can hop on on the Saturday and have something fun to play with others. Heck, there may be Saturdays when I can't attend, but it should still go on. This will also help build relationships between folks that can then prosper outside of the regular Saturday night.
There may be some weeks when this is cancelled completely, but I'd say we only really do that in favour of a huuuuuge event elsewhere, such as another Call to Arms in PlanetSide, an open PvE event in Guild Wars, or a community Dota tournament.
How Can I Help?
The simplest way is to suggest fun games for us to play together, right here in the thread.
If you're a fellow mod, you can also help out by editing this post (and the title) if I forget to do so.
Oh, and tell your friends! I know there's loads of people registered on the forum, but it's unclear how often they actually check it (particularly Game Clubs...). So long as they're the sort of people who you think the rest of this open-minded, kind community would get along with, bring them to the Saturday. Just make sure they're aware of the rules too.
Finally, film it! Streams are good, but highlight reels are better; it means I can easily include them in the Monthly Update to demonstrate our awesomeness.
Post them below, or send me a PM. You can also find me on Mumble at least a couple of evenings a night, as well as Steam.
Week Game Details 8th August Terraria Since RPS has their own Terraria server, we'll be using that. This Saturday will serve as a nice introduction event for those people who haven't yet had the chance to play with RPS.
You can buy Terraria here, and get registered with the server by posting in this thread. You'll get to view the server's progress so far, alongside taking down the bosses the existing community have already tackled.
15th August Awesomenauts A popular choice back when we ran SNG in GW2, most people have this side-scrolling MOBA from various previous bundles. Really, really easy to get into.
Buy it here - we'll go through the details of learning nice and easy on the night.
22nd August Natural Selection 2 Mixing shooting with strategy, you can play as either humans or aliens. It's pretty popular and quite cheap at the moment. Get it from Steam here. 29th August Killing Floor The second FPS element of this line-up. A nice choice, promoting cooperation in shooting zombies and hopefully not dying.
Get it here, although you probably have it already from the many, many sales.
5th September Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Don't judge from the name - just look at the reviews on the Steam page.
Amazing fun together, although 360 controller recommended.
12th September Natural Selection 2 It was fun last time. Let's play it again. Get it from Steam here. 19th September Team Fortress 2 Personally, I haven't played this in a long, long time. As it's free (and fun), this will be a nice opportunity to see what's changed. 26th September Trove Really highly rated and has group sizes to accommodate even our large numbers. Download for free here. 3rd October StarCraft II - Arcade Don't have StarCraft II? Don't worry - this is free! Don't care for RTSes? Don't worry - Arcade isn't really about the RTS aspect of the game. Instead, we'll focus on the really fun (and surprisingly hilarious) game modes.
Get it here - the download isn't huge either, as it's playable after a gig or so.
10th October Renegade X It's a free FPS based in the Command and Conquer franchise. You can drive tanks and shizz too. Should scale up well, so grab it here.
SEASON TWO COMMENCES SATURDAY THE 7TH OF NOVEMBER - Keep an eye out on this thread for details.

Warframe is free to play with a sizeable RPS community, would be nice to pay them a visit. I think it was planned before but the organiser ended up having something called "Real Life issues" whatever that is :P also some good mentions which seem to have a noteable interest by the RPS community is Rocket League and Dirty Bomb.[Steam]

This sounds like fun. It'll be nice to play with some new people, and equally nice not having to do so at about 3am because the Americans like to play at 8pm themselves!

For the open slot, how about Chivalry? Everyone and their mum has it, it's really, really fun, particularly in duels, and we're all equally crap at it (except for Moony, whom we'll "accidentally" permaban at some point during the evening).Guild Wars 2 - Failbaddon, Mars Baneblade, Vulkan Hellhammer
Elite: Dangerous - EpicTheTrumble
Steam - EPICTHEFAIL

Ooh! If nothing else, I'm gonna try and get in on that Sonic Transformed, even if I'm no good at drifting.

Could we get this as a Google calendar or other iCal feed?Disclaimer:
Sometimes I get a bit manic and then I talk too much and wall-of-text a lot.
This rarely lasts for more than a week or so at a time. Feel free to ignore any and all walls of text at your leisure.

Good replies all. Sorry about the length of this post, but I wanted to get to everyone.
The main RPS writers are absolutely loving Rocket League at the moment, and a gander at the thread suggests there may even be a tournament - or league - set up shortly. I haven't added it yet because I actually think it's a bit pricey as a one-off. Maybe later in the year.
Warframe sounds good. Shall slip it in towards the end if it's not a massive download.

Not sure what's the current status of Trackmania Nations? (I half-remember some dick move towards existing United accounts and turning them into subscriptions instead of one-time payments?)
If so, it looks like a great suggestion to me, the abundance of user tracks and the variety was astounding back in the day, and it it was up to me I'd take it any day over Sonic. (that in a totally theoretically way as I doubt I'll be able to join)Fancy a chat? Help us bring back the RPS chatroom! click on this link and press join chat.

Challenger has kindly granted me access to the calendar the PS2 crew use in Google. It's a handy tool, and I'm surprised we don't use it to show more events across different games. I will update it with the schedule from the OP in this thread, once it solidifies over the next week or so.
Talking of solidifying, I've moved Natural Selection 2 to the 22nd of August, as I know there's no PS2 ServerSmash planned for that night.
It's Terraria tonight folks, so hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Fun playing with you guys, Awesomenauts is a better game than I anticipated. Hoping Natural Selection 2 next week will be the same!
