New Player Resources
NOTE: This is very much a work in progress, but I wanted to at least get things started. Also we will have a lot more resources for Dom4 coming soon as things get updated. (Dom4 mod inspector can't come soon enough)
Probably the best way to learn is to just join a multiplayer game, lose terribly and then see what your opponent did. Then look up a bunch of stuff on the wiki or in the mod inspector and realize you could have just re-scripted a few mages (or sent to the fight in the first place) and could have won.
Dominions 4 Resources:
The manuals, 6 of these bad boys to make finding those summons, globals and magic items all the easier.
Hero List - In case you want to be sure the one hero you get definitely is the worst available.
Desura Guides - currently contains useful resources such as a Boosters guide, list of weapons/armor/spell attributes
Dominions 3 Resources:
The manual - it will lie to you occasionally*, and some things have changed since then, but still a great resource and full of extra information from the devs. Includes the inspiration for each nations designs, as well as the only place I can think of that lists the various kinds of castles each nation has available. *errata
The Dominions 3 Wiki - the best place for general information. The guides it links to are often a bit outdated if you are using CBM, but if you need to find a list of all the magic boosters, an explanation of an obscure attribute or the details of all the mercenaries this is the place to go.
The Dom3 Mod Inspector - my best friend in the whole world. This will let you look at the information for every single unit, item and spell in the game. This works for a ton of mods as well, look for the tiny "load mods" option in the upper left corner. You can get very specific with searches, but its often a bit hard to figure out the actual name of an attribute unless you check the modding manuals.
The Arco LP - A very clearly written LP of vanilla Dominions (as in no mods). Goes out of the way to cover as many things as possible, and has a lot of great detail on the basics.
The Multi Perspective LP - a bunch of the best SA players playing a huge mutli-perspective LP. A lot of players stop writing after a bit, but those that stay have a lot of more advanced techniques to talk about. Its very long, and most of the players write themed/in character updates. A great follow up after the Arco LP.
Pretender Design Guide - How to design your pretender, the different approaches and what to think about.
New Player Mistakes - this is from the wiki, but it has a lot of good things to think about. It may also just overwhelm you with how many things there are to think about
Turn Resolution Order
Communions - In case you just want to dive straight in to one of the most complex parts of the game
Desura Forums (Dominions 3, Dominions 4) - main forums for the game now that Illwinter is no longer with Shrapnel.
Dominions Mod Forums - this where most of the people behind CBM, llamaserver and all that good stuff tend to be active, devs post here on occasion as well
llamaserver - how we (usually) host games. llamaserver will do all the heavy lifting for you, everyone just emails their turns in and then it processes them and sends out the next turn. There is a guide on how to use it at the top.

Both the boosting guide and site searching tips are on the wiki. And most active players have migrated away from the shrapnel forum towards the desura forum. Here: http://www.desura.com/games/dominion...wakening/forum so it is best to ask questions at desura.
The wiki is also only for vanilla. While quite a lot of communities use mods for mp games. (The awesome and CBM mods are popular). The wiki doesn't contain stats for armor and weapons. So any protection on units is the base protection, without modifications from armor. Same for weapon stats etc.
A few grumpy old veterans from shrapnel/dom3mods/desura are on irc. irc.gamesurge.net #dominions if you have any questions feel free to drop by.
