    Maggie Thatcher is dead

I'm actually upset, I hoped the vicious old witch would suffer longer...

Still - miners and steel workers will learn to dance today! Bring on the street parties

We can rebuild the society she didn't believe in by giving concessions to sell stuff at her graveside - like toilet roll...

I'd goto town, if only she hasn't destroyed public transport ;)

There is no way people will 'play nice' with this - she was an nasty self-satisfied evil cunt of a person - the only people left in the country who'd not dance on her grave are, sadly, running the place...

I am still a bit upset tho - she was so utterly convinced that the world would stop when she left Downing St that the longer she was suffering, the better I felt.

I mean give it a bit longer and ATOS would have found her fit to work surely? :)

Okay, I despire Thatcher too, but we don't need this level of spite. Get on with attacking the current Tories, please.

Oh cmon Jim - it is the best day for Twitter gags in history and she was anti-society and anti-sympathy so expecting any is surely wrong?

Also - this, from last December

p.s. As someone smarter than me said, her funeral should be done by the lowest bidder - it's what she would have WANTED :)

I imagine if we still had a thriving coal industry today, and were exporting it to countries like India and China to feed their coal fired plants (assuming for a minute they'd need it, which they wouldn't), the same people who hate MT for destroying industry in the UK, would likely decry the UK government for out sourcing climate change to the third world.

As someone who was extremely young when she was in power (I'm 30 now), and therefore can't really claim to have any direct experience of her premiership, I suppose I look at this fairly dispassionately. The truth is, I think she ends up being blamed for globalisation in many people's minds. That's what's really happened to British industry. She didn't help matters, but the decline of conventional industry in developed economies, when developing economies are available to compete, is inevitable. The only alternative is government subsidy, which the French famously do with their agricultural industry, and are routinely slagged off for it for making it all but impossible for African farmers to make a living. The uncomfortable reality is that all the hard-fought labour market reforms in countries like ours are what make us uncompetitive. One day, developing countries will have caught up with our standard of living and our labour laws, and we can all compete on a level playing field for the same business. Until then, we will continue to be at a competitive disadvantage.

I think it's interesting she's "hated" by so many people though, many of whom, like me, probably have no real direct experience of her government. There's a funny article on the daily mash about this very issue. I'm not saying this is you, just making a general comment.

In terms of her destroying our society, isn't this a bit of rose tinted nostalgia? As I understand it, our country was in the toilet in the late 70s. Inflation peaked at 27% and Callaghan's attempt to deal with it by restricting pay rises to 5% in the public sector lead to the winter of discontent. Most commentators agree the unions had far too much power. There was a widely held view at the time that Britain was a declining country, and the government's job was simply to manage that decline.

Not really wanting to outline all her acts of evil, but I can field the coal one with some experience so I will.

It's now s pretty-well documented fact that the UK Coal Industry could and should have survived for longer than it did. It was killed (alongside UK Steel and some other industries) because it was the only way to break the power of the respective unions in those industries.

As long as those unions existed, they could fund opposition to her Capitalist, anti-Society, pro-selfishness, pro-private-ownership policies and she knew she couldn't defeat that level of support.

That's not to say the unions were 100% good - they were not - but her actions tore the heart out of entire communities just so that she could ensure she won the argument - she cared not 1 iota for anyone working in those industries (or the cost of rebuilding those peoples/communities lives either!)

Those industries would, sooner or later, have had to compete on a more global stage - they would have become privatised in one way or another and they would probably have failed - but she ensured that it was done in a way she could profit from, so she could advance her agenda without opposition.

One of her first acts was also to increase Police pay - and in doing-so she turned the Police into a private militia who targetted and victimised working families

THAT is why she is so hated - THAT is why I have not 1 shred of guilt in denouncing her as an evil witch.

She's only been in hell a few hours and I hear she's already closed several furnaces! :)

Because, like Reagan, she spearheaded the campaign for monetarism, austerity policies and supply-side economics, and austerity policies and supply-side economics not only don't work, but make life particularly miserable for the poor - whose rolls she doubled while in office.

'Round here in the States, this is criticized as "Socialism for the Rich, Capitalism for the Poor."

Even if her actions never had any effect whatsoever on me, just by reading what a horrible person she was made me despise her. Rest in pieces and may never such a cunt ever get a grip on so much power.
But where did he come from, this fleck of spite in an abandoned paradise?

Country had 27 percent inflation. She apparently stopped that. 27 percent is pretty much breaking point. a bit more and your currency is worthless for next few years (if they manage to repair the economy)
You criticize her actions but it is not like country was in a good shape was it? and for next two decades UK stayed as one of the richest most modern countries in the world.
destroying a mining industry is really a petty price.
