Let's Regress... To Play Some Gal Games

This one, recently localized in English and will come on coming June, has a demo:

    http://moenovel.com/imh/

Sometimes regressing a bit to play some less intense games isn't a bad idea.

No, it's not. It's dating sim graphic novel. Not every Japanese gal game is H (or erotic even if they are not H). In fact majority are pure gal game, no adult content included.

But almost all of them are a twist of real world inter-gender relationship, that, is a fact.

I really don't know what to make of this.

Well, adults enjoying teenage love is kind of a fine line between nostalgia and unhealthy preferences. Especially when the story description contains the phrase "ride the morning glory". That's subtext, right there.

Well people remember their individual teenage loves fondly, one could get in trouble as an adult referring to the relationships of current teenagers as anything other than cute or adorable.

Plus in reality teenage love isn't the "purest." A lot of people's first relationship is quite abusive on one side or the other. Also in many cases, depending on how you define "purest" teenage love is rather shallow, and that includes physical as well as idealized romantic love.

To be fair, the last 2 or 3 teenage years might involve legal relationships with much older people. But that can be skeezy depending on the size of the difference. For instance I know a guy who went to prom with a 19 year old when he was 32 and creeped everyone the fuck out.

Okay, it's Sunday noon, I played Call of Pripyat for the last couple of hours and now I'm taking a break. Checked the mail, brewed some coffee. Might as well do some research here.
Turns out it really is an eroge - in Japan. This version, however, has all the naughty bits removed. If you scroll down to the very bottom you can see the ESRB box. This is not such an uncommon practice, even within Japan. Even though sex sells it also puts you in a niche.
The most remarkable thing here is, however, that this is apparently initiated from the Japanese side. In the rare occasion a visual novel actually does get sold, it's usually rarely more than a fan-translation approved by the creators. Although going by the example screenshots, it might be just that or maybe I'm simply too jaded to appreciate gems like "It's because I can't fly that I want to fly".

Admittedly, my own experience with playing eroges has been brief yet very harrowing. It was not only an eroge but also a murder mystery and a very gory one at that. Luckily, never at the same time. I ran into a bad end, the girl got killed in a most dire way and then somebody threw an uterus at me. I had to look it up if I remembered that correctly. I did. I wish I had a bottle of vodka instead of coffee now.

Was about to write in that the Japan has it as 18+, while the English version is 12+ (Source: VNDB)

In Japan, it's a fairly big niche. Or at least, a niche that spends enough to make an eroge #2 best sold PC game for a while (Kanon) and generate two mainstream anime series off it.

Visual novels do the same thing for me as books/comics. Sit down and work through a story for up to ~40hrs. Some are good if you want something emotional (Kanon (aka Sad Girls in the Snow), Narcissu), others are genuinely good stories (Steins;Gate, Sharin no Kuni). Some are just something new and interesting (Quartett!, which is more like a motion comic). Being pretty much 98% plot, 2% gameplay, plot/writing is obviously more important, which is why they've got pretty much every AAA game beat in that sense (for me). Games are normally at least 80% gameplay, 20% plot (MGS4, lord of the cutscenes).

In 90% of the plot-based visual novels (not the blatant fap material), you can slice out the sex scenes and be left with a 100% functional game/plot. Much like The Witcher, or The Underworld movies (Kate Beckinsale's catsuit was the first thing to come to mind). They actually do that for most of the console ports (on top of adding voices).

I first played a VN about two years back, and while it takes a bit of getting used to seeing this, eventually you just adapt and get to the meat of the story.

Oops, sorry guys. My bad. I haven't played with the Jap version before. I don't encounter any adult content in the demo so I presumed this is not erotic. I am wrong.

But since it is rated T for teens, I guess you don't need to watch out for adult content in this English release?

Yet, it is still true that majority of tons of Japanese Gal games are not erotic. My favorite: Sakura Wars by Sega.

I once read through a lets play of Sengoku Rance on the RPG Codex, and it was shockingly strategical once you got passed all the porn. I would never play one myself though and I probably won't read another one. Its not exactly the same as the genre on display here but it says a lot that a porn game was more interesting gameplay wise than 90% of regular strategy games.

I think if Visual Game developers played Masq you could get really good games out of it.

So, that girl is in a wheelchair and this is an eroge game. Does anyone else think of Katawa Shoujo?
But where did he come from, this fleck of spite in an abandoned paradise?

Masq is definitely something everyone should play. The plot is kind of daft, but the way things spiral is pretty impressive.

Yes. I expect the quality control will be a lot better on this though. KS had some serious issues with tedium inducing conversations.
