You know what would be cool, a pirate game similar to FTL (similar but with some obvious changes). Managing your pirate ship and crew while sailing around would be cool. I'd get rid of the whole "rape wall" is chasing you thing and the rush to the end thing though and make it more of a persistent world (might not be the right term, but I couldn't think of anything else).

Upgrades could be things like better cannons and small arms for the crew, better/more sails, etc. Instead of managing oxygen and fuel you could manage food, water, and rum.

    Well, there's the upcoming Raven's Cry: http://youtu.be/0-qbfT-H4fQ

And Captain Blood, which was apparently cancelled even though it's been in development for almost 10 years and was pretty much finished: http://youtu.be/GvGbo65UyYU

Oddly enough the official website is still up: http://www.captainbloodgame.com/

Check out Pirates of the Burning Sea. The ship to ship combat is pretty good fun, but the rest of the game is a bit ... err ... ropey. But hey, it's free!

I think Risen 2 deserves a fair chance.
It is flawed by a silly story, mostly unlikable characters, uninspired quests and a terribad combat system (why, just why didn't they stick with the one from Risen 1?!), but it offers beautiful environments that kinda make up for it. It is not at all as bad as it is made out to be imo. I'm not a fan of pirates but still, I was taken by the game for almost 40 hours...

I gave up on Risen 2 after 6 Hrs.
I found the controls to be clunky, movement too slow (and you have to buy a map. if you want fast travel), RPG elements confusing and punishing (pick sword-fight and you'll miss most of the treasure and you won't have money to buy abilities. Pick cunning and you will miss experience points, because you will not be able to last in most of the fights), difficulty spikes out of the blue, graphics are sometimes great and some times horrible (character models) and many more...

It's a shame because there a few great ideas in there and game nails the pirate theme.
It just seems it was released too early and the developers/publishers preferd to too make a couple of DLC instead of making a better game.

I think the best way currently to experience being a pirate is to play Space Rangers 2 as a pirate. Sure, it's pirates in space, but i still think it's a pretty good if you want to role-play a pirate.

EVE Online I thought when I tried to do piracy was quite exciting and gave you a nice feel of how piracy would work. Unfortunately there wasn't that many people in low sec space to pirate against.

I posted some screenshots as well. You can't play as a pirate, unfortunately, but the mission objectives are fairly diverse, there's some light ship customization/fleet management and the ship-to-ship combat is pretty fun.

Age of Pirates is ok, though the translation is a bit ropey. Best pirate game ever imho was Cuthroats: Terror on the High Seas

    That sounds so awesome.

Not a computer game, rather a board game, but Merchants and Marauders (link goes to Shut Up & Sit Down review) sounds like a beautiful freeform piratey sort of thing, where all the players sail around gathering crew and doing piratey things. Maybe like a multiplayer Pirates! but I cannot say, having never played either of them. =P But yeah, the talk about FTL pirate stuff got me thinking about how I considered buying this piratey game for a while. (I settled on Libertalia in the end; another, faster-paced pirate board game).

Can't think of any other computer ones though =) I feel like there's one in the back of my mind I'm forgetting about, but I'm probably actually just mistaking the sea combat minigame from Monkey Island 3 for a game of its own. =P

Pirates of New Horizons is probably not what you want, but it's a fun shell of a game.

Yes, I'm going to mention it again. Seems relevant though.

Escape Velocity: Nova is really fun to play as a pirate, there's a whole pirate government, mission string and tech tree for it but of course you don't need to actually use any of that stuff to be a pirate. The best thing about it is that when you plunder a disabled ship, assuming your crew is bigger, you can hijack it and force it to be an escort. It doesn't get much piratier than that.

Now if only GOG could hurry up and get their hands on it so it costs less than $30...

Edit: Oh yeah, it's possibly as close as you can get to a pirate-themed FTL without the 'rapewall'. Granted, combat isn't even remotely close, but you have to manage your fuel and shields (as in, don't get stuck without fuel, run away from combat when you're going to die) and you can sort of manage your crew by buying marine platoons for the hijacking of vehicles.

Btw, Risen 2 is on sale atm on GMG for £ 5.44.
The excellent Risen 1, which is kinda piratey is on sale as well for £ 4.08 on GMG. If you haven't played it, it is definitaly worth that money!

Am I the only one who has a little bit of faith in Ass Creed Black Flag ?
The ship combat in AC3 was wonderfully athmospheric, so if we have a nice ambiance, some ship upgrade system, interesting high-scale open world ship combats and dynamic crew battles I will be really glad.

I'm still waiting for a Sea Dogs 3 in AC3's engine but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

Yeah I'm kinda looking forward to AC4. I was kinda disappointed in AC3, but the acknowledgement that there needs to be more assassinations and a more freedom in them has me at least interested. That and as you said the ship mechanics and open worldness of it nice enough for me to enjoy it even if it's not a good assassination game.

To be fair, EV Nova offers an extremely generous 30-day trial. Some of the missions are locked out and you can't use mods but it's more than enough to let you know whether it's worth your $30.

You've also just gone and made me reinstall it, because that sounds like a fun way to play.

I'm looking forward to it. I haven't been interested since 2. Brotherhood was supposedly a lot better, but I didn't feel the need to play a better AC2--I figured I'd wait for a more distant relative to show up. Revelations didn't really catch my attention nor did AC3 ... but this one seems like enough of a change that it might be worthwhile even if it isn't substantially "better."
