Actually, in the talk Gabe gave, their looking to take it 1 step further. Complete crowd/joint sourced games with royalty/purchase systems for code and content (just like the Steam TF2 Mod database currently I guess but with money, not hats).

Probably more to do with this http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tradingcards rather than anything to do with actually trading games.

STEAM has become a MMO. It was already online-only, now it uses dirty tactics and psychological tricks to keep you glued. The number of STEAM fanboys who refuse to get games from anywhere else will increase tenfold.

This is the most stupid thing Valve has ever done.
But where did he come from, this fleck of spite in an abandoned paradise?

Yay, more bloat to what is still the most unresponsive program on my system. Way to go Valve.

Yeah, I mean, it's completely optional and doesn't affect those not interested in collecting cards in any way, shape or form. Still, it never hurts to bitch and moan like crazy. Because reasons.

Achievements, leveling, collectibles. Shit reeks like a racetrack.

    Oh, yes. Neopets.

Yeah, those updates, bugs and system pauses while Steam stops working don't effect others... ;)
But in reality, people here are not complaining about how it effects them, but more to how Steam, the company they are invested in, is not catering to them as customers.

Steam isn't just trying to compete with other digital game sellers, they're also trying to compete with social media platforms like Xfire and Kongregate. While some people personally are not the market for these changes, there is a huge swath of people interested in the kind of things Steam is introducing.

I was just wondering, does this mean you could make a living playing videogames?

You already can. Though it is as hard work as going to actual work. But with the added risk of a futures market. So most either go to the futures market (more pay, but same risk) or actual work (sometimes more pay, sometimes less, but less risk).

I don't see myself using this at all, but I don't see the harm in it. I just wish that Steam would stop introducing new features and focus on redesigning the actual client. Seriously, Steam is just an abysmal piece of software, and seeing as how its coming from a software company it's kind of baffling. Seriously, iTunes works better than the Steam client half of the time, and iTunes is awful.

Honestly, as much as I hate the system, I've made about $7 steam credit from letting valve games idle and then selling the cards. I'm still in disbelief that people will pay nearly a dollar for these things.
It's also kind of a weird addition since I thought gamification was meant to make banal tasks slightly more bearable by throwing a Skinner Box on top of it. But these are games. Do we really need extraneous reinforcement for our entertainment?

I am another one who wishes it was possible to trade games on Steam. I'm happy with most of my collection but there are certainly a few things I could live without, and not being able to completely hide them (something which Origin does allow you to do) is also an annoyance. I don't know if there's ever been a proper legal challenge to Valve on this to try to force them to allow a resale market though? Although if there has been, it presumably didn't succeed.

Valve could be banking on the possibility that trade between in-game/inter-game content could outstrip any potential value of games themselves rendering resales worthless.

This went quiet so I thought I'd wake-it-up because I can't be the only person here making money for doing nothing, can I?

The Steam Trading Cards BETA is in full swing - they just added even more games today - and the cards rewarded often sell for a decent sum (of Steam Wallet Credit) so it seems churlish not to do it?

I completed 1 deck using money I got selling old TF2 items - that pushed my Level over 10 which is generally what people seem to think entitles you to a chance of 'Foil' drops (worth a lot more) - I've since just sold-off any cards I earned from my games.

As it stands, I've earned over £12 (about $17?) for playing a few games - I could even just have left the games idling and got the cards but I thought the least I could do was play the games!!

If anyone would like an invite, I have a few space - Steam Id is shrewdlogarithm - say hi and I'll throw you one.

It is a bit weird - just getting cards 'for being in-game' feels a bit odd and they need to stamp-out getting cards for being idle especially.

Their next update talks of throwing-out 'booster packs' to people who've already earned all the cards in a game - so it will get even more convoluted!!

Bottom line tho - in one case I traded GamersGate Blue Coins for a game on Steam which earned me £2-odd from it's cards - that's a free game with extra free money and we thought BUNDLES were cheap!?

Huh. I'm cautiously curious ... surely people won't pay me money for random cards that give them tokens? This might be worth investigating.
