Exactly. I'd already lost the convenience of re-sales, trade ins for games that were buggy and the local shop stocking anything other than the Sims. Way before Steam turned up.

Steam just added reasonable pricing, convenience, indie games and a bunch of other features to make it all more palatable.

Steam was just an example of Valve's excellent business model at work:

Figure out what people are going to be interested in from a few prototypes (I think Direct2Drive or some other never-alive service came first), then make their own version with a crapton of polish and style. Insert huge profits.

I don't think you remember what Steam was like when it first came out.

I dunno when it first came out it all worked smoothly for me. Never had any bugs, offline mode even worked off the bat.

Same. I didn't like it because it was different, but I had no problems playing Counterstrike and the like.

Microsoft is officially the owner of Xbone.com, a domain name that came to light just days after the company's Larry Hryb expressed his dislike of the Xbox One nickname.Hryb took to gaming forum NeoGAF earlier in the week regarding the use of "Xbone," stating: "I don't like it. It disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product."
Microsoft purchased both Xboxone.com and Xboxone.net domain names earlier in the year following the unveiling of the new system. It's likely the company is securing the domain to prevent it from being used as a parody site in the future.
You would think their marketing heads disrespected the Xbox teams on their own by naming it XBox One...

    Streisand Effect in effect

In all seriousness, Xbone.com is more asthetically pleasing than Xboxone.com

Not really. I would have preferred "XBOX 2 Pi" (well, actually, "XBOX 361", but I am an immature idiot), but the point is that it is continuing the circle/full revolution motif. The XBONE was just something funny that they should have notice sooner.

Also, I suspect they expected XB1 or X1 since people call it "the 360" or "XBOX360".

At this point if you are Microsoft and you release a new thing the internet will have a silly twist on the name.

    Ψ_n(xbox) = (2^(1/4)/sqrt(n!))e^(-πx^2)He_n(2x(π)^(1/2))

Because the next Xbox has many eigenfunctions.

Xbone.com redirects to Bing Search for "xbone". What the hell?

They should go with it and promote free X shaped dog bones with any pre-orders or 1st day purchases.

If they had of embraced it even a little, people would've found it funny. The way Kazuo Hirai embraced being an internet meme, even just a little bit by saying he thought some of them where funny and enjoyed that so many people liked them.
