Dominions 3 Faerūn map multiplayer game

Well, lets try something a little crazy. Who would be up for a game of dominions 3 on the faerūn map? We only need 24 people. I expect we need all nations of a certain era, but the era itself is not yet picked so suggestions are welcome.

So who is up for a game?

The map can be found here: http://www.llamaserver.net/mapModBrowser.cgi (look for faerūn 466 - adventure - fixed start locations)

    Contact details

    Map: Alexander
    Age: all
    Skill level: we take all
Turn times: TBA (faster in the beginning, slowing down over time I expect)
    Victory conditions: TBA
    Mods: CBM 1.94
    Admins: multiple, just in case

Yes! I Look forward to using the experience I've picked up so far

FYI Dom 3 is £9.03 from Gamersgate with the code elder-geek.com so that should be enough to sway fence sitters.

I love my Niefl Giants but i know ethically I should pick someone else.

On the assumption that this game will take a while to set-up, and that I'll be dead in at least one of the other games by the time we start, then I'd like to join in.

I was thinking of joining another game, but that map is ridiculously big.

Therefor we need more players and good victory conditions, it's as simple as that.

edit: I just made a quick calculation, both this map and Blackwald have about 20 regions a player, so technicly they are just as big for each player.

Sure, at the start. But the later stages will be near unmanageable, assuming a large number of players will get knocked out.

I'll sign up and give it a try, provided you'll pick a smaller map if we don't get a full complement of players.

I think I'll pick this up. Is there likely to be anyone wanting to play a smaller game before this one starts? I'd rather not jump straight in to the meat grinder.

give the AI a try, it's not perfect but it gives a reasonable fight.

I'm in for a second game.

I'd like to play middle age r'lyeh if possible, do you have an idea how you'll pick/assign nations?

Additionally are you proposing vanilla or some form of modded?

good you ask, we will run with CBM 1.94 I assume. Just to spice things up. About picking nations...I gues you just picked one. Unless people argue otherwise we will be playing MA and first pick I assume. Although, let's all be civil and try to work out something if you really hope to play a certain nation.

We can also do random nation if people are more in favour of that? It's all up to you.

I need to look at the MA options. I'm not really familiar with anything out of EA

hmm, small problem, there are only 23 nations in MA. So I gues we play with 23 nations or we play EA, which has 24 nations.

Won't that really screw with the balance?

Not as much as you might think. I've played an all nations of all eras game on a slightly smaller map to some sort of completion and the two major nations left standing at the end (they understandably didn't have the stamina to slog out a 500 province endgame and so killed the rest of us and then declared friendship forever) were MA Vanheim and EA Sauromatia. Not that either is weak or anything and they certainly win games under normal circumstances but they're hardly at the very top of the heap. With 60 players in the game the strength of your nation -- which already varies wildly within eras -- is just of middling importance compared to factors like your start position and prior experience with playing Diplomacy.

Fair warning from that experience: Dom3 with 500 provinces honestly isn't that enjoyable for most players once the initial smashing and grabbing is over, especially when the map is as sparse as is planned here. Managing 50 provinces in endgame takes 2-4 hours per turn, which is a state a lot of people reach on this sort of gigantic map and winning nations might end up 4 times that size. Several players can expect to have 20+ forts and fully completed research, and several other players can also expect to end up an insignificant runt state at the arse end of nowhere that doesn't get invaded because their single, much larger neighbor is busy fighting with some annoying bastard viking gods on ponies or something. Around half the participants will stop playing and either go AI or permanently stale while whoever played them does fun and enjoyable things instead. If you go with 30 provinces/head then the vast majority of the fighting will be against neutrals and AIs and whoever gets most of them nearby tends to win.

That said, it's just a video game. If you really want to try the megagame experience then by all means go for it. I'd definitely suggest keeping to maybe 10 provinces/player (or less, if more than an era's worth of players) to make sure that players get to fight actual players and keep the workload closer to the neighborhood of sanity throughout, and to not have any huge expectations on player retention in any case. Also, never play on Oeridia.

O.o, is that possible... That opens up a lot of posibilities.

Turns out it is possible, so have fun in making a choice from all options!
