Find someone who likes military shooters please

For the love of all that is RPS, please find someone who actually enjoys military shooters or just stop covering them. I hated the concept of MOBAs before reading Cara's pieces and seeing what joy could actually be had in one. Now I dabble in DOTA 2 once in a while. Why can't military FPS games get the same type of treatment?

I am not saying there should be a permanent staff position or anything, but this E3 seems like RPS has gone in and declared that BF4 is the bane of the gaming industry simply for existing. Why? Well because they don't give a damn about console racing games or God of War alikes... no the bane must be the military shooters.

It is clear none of you like them anymore... maybe Nathan... but probably none of you. So find someone who does and let them do pieces on them. There is good and bad and things to criticize in the games, but you have gotten so freakin lazy that Jim posted about BF4 commander as if it was a FPSRTS experimental component and not a returning feature in the series. He also lampooned it as if Natural Selection 2 wasn't actually making that type of game work brilliantly. This was surprising to me because Jim did a decent job with the Rising Storm Wot I Think. Was that just because Tripwire is indie enough for the RPS ideals?

Please either start taking these games seriously enough to do criticism (even in a lighthearted way) or bring someone else in who cares. It is starting to get embarrassing how lazy RPS coverage is when the writers seem to care more about the snark then even getting the story accurate.

I suspect the combination of Manshoot + Evil EA is just too much to resist Misnomer. Any article basically railing on either of those two is going to garner massive page clicks, and combined it's enough of a draw to ensure that the Hivemind can keep themselves in Eccles cakes & Rum Babas for the rest of the year.

I like military shooters, but I buy them when they are violently discounted. However I think you and I might mean different things as I do NOT ENJOY linear corridor manshoots with QTE's.

That's a weird complaint to make. RPS loves the Arma series, for instance.

But that would make RPS turn into any other generic gaming site, just like Battlefield is turning into Call of Duty. Haha ha ha.

Maybe the problem is that it mostly looks the same and there really isn´t anything new to report about them?

Yeah, ARMA wouldn't really be classified as a "shooter". Serious Sam, Doom, Battlefield, Call of Duty and Ghost Recon (Advanced Warfighter onwards) are shooters in that your principle interaction and context in the game is clicking to make guns shoot.

But, this classification is horse manure. I played 90% of Bioshock 2 (a proudly self proclaimed shooter) without shooting (drill specialist) I played Battlefield 2 alot of the time as a transport pilot or commander (shooting artillery I guess), yes ultimately I was expected to get shooting at any given moment but I feel the classification holds games back.

God knows we need more positive coverage of first person shooters. The blatant corruption displayed by the gaming press giving every single AAA FPS 9-10 scores just doesn't suck in enough people to pre order the games to make the industry money.

    Not at all.

And I go to those other sites for good coverage of military FPS games. You will notice that one of my suggestions is that they stop covering them entirely if they refuse to do a good job. I don't need RPS to like the games I like nor do I even need them to cover them. I am commenting that they have done a very shoddy job reporting lately on these games by blatantly misstating facts about the games and letting their bias and desire for snark override addressing the games at all.

While this trolling seems to encourage the likeminded bits of the RPS community, it reflects quite poorly on the blog as a whole. So, thus my pleas that they find someone who cares enough to do a good job (even if that is a good job disliking the games) or just stop covering them.

You guys are right, when it comes to Planetside 2, ArmA 2, and Red Orchestra related things... it seems like they are willing to put out some effort to get it right.

I am not asking for positive coverage for the BF's, MOH's, or COD's . . . just get the facts right at least. If they aren't worth the bother to get the facts right, stop covering them.

I think they do a fantastic job considering how little they enjoy them. I especially liked the commentary to CoD:Dog.

But what you sound like you want is for them to tongue the anus of DICE and Infinity Ward and Treyarch like every other site out there. Remember: This is not a news site. This is a commentary blog. They don't have to cover everything and this is one of the things they're really not interested in.

If you don't consider the coverage of shooters worth reading then don't read it.

I see you are one of these no facts people.

Of course you are just talking about COD and BF then right? Because your problem is those are popular and not actually that it is a military shooter?

And now the ones you care about:

Not one of those averaged 9-10. But maybe you mean that RPS has to counter outliers that drive those scores up. I don't really see a "AAA" bias in those scores.

And if we are talking about bias for shooters against other genres on PC:

    http://www.metacritic.com/browse/gam...view=condensed

Neither the most recent top 10 nor the all time top ten have a "military shooter" in them. If anything, the RPG's seem to be the ones that get the number inflation.

Regardless, RPS doesn't hand out scores anyway so my concern is over their poor reporting and if they chose to crusade against "9-10s" to make it a ten point scale and not a 5 point scale... then more power to them.

It is NOT ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEY LIKE THE GAME. They should hate it all they want. Just get the facts right. That is hardly sucking up to a game developer. If they don't want to cover it then simply don't cover it.

I am talking about statements like this:

And also a top-down commander mode. WUH OH. No, it’s probably fine, it might work, in the way so proven by numerous other RTSFPS hybrids.
    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013...-it-good-four/

It shows blatant disregard for the subject matter he was reporting on. Much like Walker's coverage of MOH. Once they decide it will be bad for being a AAA military shooter, knowledge of the game and the genre go out the door.

3 of the top 10 on that link are shooters. I guess that doesn't count because they aren't military shooters?

The only 2 calls of duty on that list are 90+. MoH is 90+. Battlefield is like 92/90/87/87/87. 3 Calls of Duty in the 87/86/86.

Sorry. Not all 90s. So much worse.

Those 3 shooters in the top ten being: Half Life 2, Half Life, and Bioshock (and The Orange Box really as well).

So we should have free license to make up crap about Activision and EA military shooters because... Valve sci-fi shooter single player games and a 2K singleplayer RPG/shooter are very highly ranked. What?

Also, that MOH is MOH:AA and two of the Call of Duties in the 90s are COD4 and COD. The highest BF, and only one in the 90s, is BF2 (with BF3 and BF1942 at 89). So that inflation you were claiming about was pre-2006 and we need to keep it down? Are are you actually claiming the quality of all these games I just mentioned is too low to deserve those scores?

Once again, this has no relation to the point I am making about RPS since they don't use scores. But you seem to be making the point that the bias slanting toward bad reporting is justified because of the positive bias of media to military shooters. I think that positive bias is unsubstantiated, especially when compared to things like media treatment of fantasy RPG's on PC.

Are you actually claiming the quality of those games is HIGH enough to deserve those scores? Rampant score inflation. Notice that 74% counts as a "mixed" score on metacritic. Jesus christ.

Eh. Don't care to debate score inflation any more here.

On the other hand, it does seem the blatantly inaccurate reporting on games the writer doesn't care about has extended to military RTS games...

    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013...an-e3-trailer/

    John responded with this

12/06/2013 at 18:42 John Walker says:

Oops, sorry folks. I completely misread the Steam page, and should never be let near RTS stories, ever.

I recall John flubbing about Borderlands 2 DLC a while back too. Seems that lately when there is a pricing scheme or game that the RPS writer dislikes, facts are sacrificed for the greater point that must be made with snark.

Seems they should find people who are willing to care or stop falsely reporting on things that they don't care about.
