Cube world. Are you playing it? What do you think?

After the issue with the initial launch (due to the sheer number of people wanting the game), I'm interested in what RPS thinks of the alpha so far:

What do you like about the game?
What do you dis-like about the alpha?
What do you think will change?
What would you like added into the game?
    Official RPS Thread argument catalyst.

    Website

The game looks AMAZINGLY expansive. If it has even half as much content as the trailer leads me to believe it has, I think I could easily sink as much time into it as Minecraft. Given that it's actually fun to play, of course.

One question though: How much does it actually cost?

I would have already purchased it if their store hadn't gone down. The website is up, but to buy it you have to register...and registrations aren't allowed.

I believe the price is supposed to be $20.

Played it for an hour. Created a goblin mage because why not. It's cute and all but I've no idea what I'm playing for besides the old "level up your dude" thing. Without any building and digging stuff it feels a bit barebones. Maybe there's more to it than that if I keep at it.

It's a bit funny how random enemy strengths are. A sheep, a bunny or a witch are an even match in combat one on one but a squirrel or a bark beetle will beat you like a red-headed step child. At least for your first hour or so of play.

Oh and F1 brings up full controls list. Took me awhile to figure that one out.

The game looks amazing and I really want it, but they have already reminded me why I try to only buy games that have the support of a major store behind them (or at least Desura). If their store and system already crapped out, odds are good they could go down at any time. So that means I need to back up the downloader, keep it up to date, etc. And if I am gonna deal with that, I would rather have a retail copy.

So I'll hold off until they either get Steam/Desura/GoG support or at least have a good sale.
    Steam: Gundato
    PSN: Gundato
If you want me on either service, I suggest PMing me here first to let me know who you are.

This release has been an enormous fuckup. The store has been down for 2 days after being open for 15 minutes and then intermittent openings and it still doesn't allow new accounts. The dev refused help from Notch and Humble Bundle out of pride/greed. On the other hand pirates can play the game freely.

Perhaps he refused help because he wants to do it himself and what's wrong with that?

He doesn't owe you a game, you're acting like the entitlement-focussed internet child here...

If you have such a massive hard-on to play it RIGHT NOW - why not play the pirated version and then buy it later - not exactly world-shatteringly complex to work-out is it?

I thought it used a Minecraft-like server backend doodah tho - is that not the case then?

On the demo - is it supposed to show anything behind the title - all I get is a lot of blue for a few mins...

Update: OOh - nope - world is there now - very pretty - if I hit escape it crashes tho...

Calm down I'm just calling it like it is. The fact that people can't buy his game with the hype surrounding it will hurt him and him alone. I have no stake in this.

After 4 hours playing and one boss down I have to say the game is fun and has potential, but I can already see the present and some future fuckups.

What is there: races, classes and some items/quests to start playing. There's crafting for some items, pets, basic economy and sources for materials like ores and wood. The game is gorgeous too: http://imgur.com/a/WHlVd

For content, there's almost no active skills. There's no tutorial or tips. Most NPCs are just oneliner background noise. Innkeepers reset the day to 7am but nobody tells you that. There seems to be decent monster variety, and humanoids have classes and weapons so there are several different archetypes. Dungeons are 10 clumps of similar mobs put together inside a scary structure.

Bugs: world generation needs tweaks. Traps do not affect enemies. The AI is abysmal, pathfinding problems on NPCs, single behavior enemies, no group/survival instincts, the boss I saw could be kited to death. The game plays best at min zoom, except when you get into buildings the camera doesn't get inside so you have to zoom manually. The economy and difficulty curves aren't there at all, it's just a popamole getgoldies mess. The UI doesn't scale well to my laptop's resolution so there's overlapping in shops and inventory, as windows are not draggable.

Then there's the straight bad design choices like there's a whole tree of pointless passive skills: climb 5% faster, your pet gets 2% more HP...and paragliding requires 5 levels of climbing (a.k.a. 3 game levels a.k.a. 3 hours playing minimum) because fuck you. Cities are big, great for simulation, shit to be running around from shop to shop. There's bound to be more bad design choices like "no modding allowed" I bet wooly won't want to back down from.

It almost certainly won't - at worst a few "IGOTTAHAVEITNOW" types will lose interest, but otherwise the world will keep turning, the sun will rise tomorrow (about 10 mins time here) and people will, sooner or later, buy the game if they fancy it.

He's clearly chosen the 'Minecraft path' and that's risky (as Minecraft is the only game to every pull that off) but that's his choice and judging from the level of interest, he might be right.

The launch failure certainly did hurt him. You only have one release day and the hype that surrounds that, and that hype helps draw in the people who are casually interested in his game. The longer this state of affairs lasts the more customers he is losing.

Frankly he should have done a short pre-order, maybe 24 hours, to just gauge interest.

This just isn't true at all - if this was a full product new game launch then it might be bad, but it's just a release of the alpha to generate some funds - it's like Day1 of a Kickstarter with a spelling mistake on the pitch...

There's a long way to go with this game - it may transpire to be "not that great" and it certainly needs some work. It's not got Minecraft's "building" hook, it's more an RPG and it currently doesn't have a lot of 'RPG' in it.

SO long as he keeps working on it and knocking stuff out tho - I see no reason that a few glitches with the store/site will make any difference.

I'd be more concerned about the dodgy cubeworld-game.com site - but they know about it and don't seem concerned (it's offering a free download of the game but whether that's just malware, a hacked version or what I've no idea) - and it's often the top hit on google for 'cube world'...

Hijacked thread, am I the only one talking about the actual game?

It's very obviously an alpha with big holes everywhere, but movement and combat feel really smooth, and it's got some really nice voxely asset design. I'm looking forward to 1.0, whenever that may be. The world generator is good too.

I agree with the comments about the game.

I really like a few things, like vampires, dungeons and using the terraria save model ( so you can freely mix worlds and characters ).
I have a elven mage chicks and the game is really fun to me, but dont seems to have much to it in the long term wihout modding, digging or building. Seems a fun lan game.

Well the only thing that really needs to be solid in an early state is the movement and fighting mechanics. If they have that down already this could turn out really well.

A release is a release though. It gets news sites to post about it and generates word of mouth. He is squandering marketing potential.

Anecdotal, but I would have purchased it on the day it went live. I went to his site with credit card in hand. Now I am fine with waiting and hearing more about it.

My Undead Ranger (Scout Specialist) just hit lvl 19. I've discovered 4 biomes, each with their own city, missions, mobs, terrain, level ranges and goodness knows what else.

I've only been playing it a couple of days, i'll report back as and when I find more stuff to mention. But yes, this game is GARGANTUAN in size.

Also, guilty pleasure, but i'm really enjoying the "Gotta catch 'em all" feel with taming pets. Shame that, currently they lose all EXP and revert back to their initial level when you unequip them, but that'll get fixed in time.

I can personally, whole-heartedly suggest the Snout Beetle for a Ranger if you're playing Co-Op with a Melee friend. :D
