Quick Question: Which is the best Turn-based Tactics game?

Just doing some research into the ol' turn based tactics games of yore, and I'm wondering where to start. I've already got X-Com downloading, and I've turned to Jagged Alliance to find a slightly bewildering amount of sequels and expansions.

So: Ignoring X-Com, what's the greatest Turn-based Tactics game around? The best of the Jagged Alliance series would be good to know, but if there's another, better game I haven't heard of then shoot.

Jagged Alliance 2, if you ask me. I can't even begin to fathom how many hours I've sunk to it. Never bothered with the expansions, so I can't say if they are worth the time. Also, lately I've been sinking some time to Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together on PSP, very nice one also.

I would really reccommend jagged alliance. I played for the first time recently, and it still holds up. As for versions, get jagged alliance 2 (gog.com is a good place to get it). There is a mod called 1.31 or something like that that improves the game a lot. It does change the game alot though, so it's probably best to play vanilla for a while until you understand everything.

Jagged Alliance 2, 1.13 mod (even for a first play it's well worth it). Struggling to find a link to the easy installer for the mod because their forums are a mess, but you can get the game for £2 at the moment: http://www.getgamesgo.com/Product/ja...2-gold-edition

There's also Incubation, which seems to be held in high opinion. I haven't played it yet, but I picked it up in the Battle Isle pack from GoG to give it a try: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/battle_isle_platinum

Damnit! I just bought JA2 off GoG for $2 more. Or in internet terms, fifty games.

Fallout Tactics is pretty great. Frozen Synapse is also excellent. Elven Legacy is good.

On the PC and excluding UFO, I've no idea. On all platforms, Final Fantasy Tactics.

Fallout Tactics is a pretty awful game, especially when you compare it to Jagged Alliance 2. Frozen Synapse is phase based.

Final Fantasy Tactics is watered down garbage. Not advised at all.

I'll second (third? fourth?) Jagged Alliance 2, v1.13.

I'd also say Fallout Tactics... Is quite good. Decent story, good mix of characters/NPCs for your squad, lots of customisation etc. Decent campaign and progression.

Frozen Synapse as well... Is excellent. Single Player, either campaign or skirmish are decent enough, but then there's the Mutliplayer, which is fantastic... easy to get into, decent matchmaking, easy to play with the ability to walk away and come back to provide your turn at a later time. Definitely recommended.

I'm also going to say Baldur's Gate Trilogy and IceWind Dale. With the active pause, they can be played as Turn based, if you wish. Although they are more focussed on being RPGs, there is plenty of interesting Combat and Tactics available. Check them out if you haven't.
ARPS unofficial motto - And then we leave. No heroic stands.

I couldn't agree more! I would also highly recommend Doom. It may not seem much like a turn-based tactics game but if you only allow yourself to change direction at second intervals then it plays just like Jagged Alliance 2.

Silent storm is great until you end up having to use those stupid steampunk mecha things (note; way less cool than that makes them sound)

edit Actually, a slightly parallel question for Wizadry and everyone else, I kinda bounced off Baldur's Gate due to the combat. What 'old school' rpgs (or hybrids thereof) would you reccomend -I know you don't rate Fallout's combat system - for some turn based tactical combat action, the only one I've heard spoke of is Temple of Elemental Evil (Which I haven't tried)

Good grief. What's the point of adding Wizardry to my ignore list if I always click "view post" anyway?

M.A.X. and M.A.X. 2 are some of the best TBS games out there (but nothing like Xcom or JA).

GoG also has a sale on JA 1 and 2 this weekend, FYI.
