Yeah, but you HAVE to immediately build another one to really get the most out of their ability; otherwise you won't get very many ruins. In the event that some other civs luck out and gobble up most of the ruins, I'd be hurting for not having gotten something more generally useful out.

Is it just me or once you get the ability to build Trading Posts the workers will just spam them everywhere?

That's why I keep workers off auto. You right though, they'll just try build them everywhere unless the tile will take another improvement like the quarry.

to be fair, in most cases in the later game that is the best option.

I like the ones which are contextual. It’s kind of irritating that you have someone from the 20th century giving a quote for a technology you discover in a billion BC though. They’re still all very quotable, and I’m glad I know them, but it does sort of reiterate the whole sort of leaning that the series has towards the notion that World civilization didn’t really take off until America did.

Because they don't want to use the ones they used in previous Civ iterations.

Okay, I had heard of science victories at turn 250 and earlier and tried my hand at it. I'm not going to bring any suspension into this: I failed pretty miserably. It's one of those weird games where absolutely everything works against you. The starting position looked pretty great at first. A lot of sheep, cattle and horses for every city so stables were really good. I overextended very hard in the beginning and that didn't work out at all. I was struggling with happiness to the end. The first thing that went really, really bad when my first neighbor turned out to be the Maya. Maya on higher difficulties are really bad news. He had built Borobodur and used all of his missionaries to convert my cities before I could get my own prophet out and all of that still in BC. This way I was stranded with an absolutely awful religion that had no redeeming qualities beyond pagodas. Hell, he even went full piety only to add some awful reformation belief. It's like he wasn't even trying.
It also turned out city states were suspiciously absent. Turns out, playing on a ring type map puts all the city states in the middle ocean. I only found out about that after discovering satellites.
Then I advanced to the industrial age and I was in for the next shock: no coal. No coal at all. I forgot to check after satellites but I wouldn't be surprised if there was none on the entire map. No aluminum either. That really put a large hole in my order strategy.
After I went order, France, for some reason, went autocracy and my happiness instantly went from +20 to -20 and I had to switch over. This was pretty bad but still doable. I built Prora and at least the happiness benefits are comparable to order. About 50 turns after that everyone else picked up order and I had to switch again. At this point I was really shaking my head in disbelief.
In the end I still won uncontested but it was my worst science victory by far. I think I will try again tomorrow with a more normal map.
