Depending when you do this I'd be happy to provide a FOB for those of us that detest flying!

With the new patch and possible changes to the air game, there has been some talk about getting people flying as a group and training again. So I think it's time to revive this old thread to discuss possible training sessions.

What kind of training are people interested in? In the past, we've mostly done basic introductions, but also some dogfighting training. With gals being high priority targets, it might be appropriate to do some group attacking exercises as well?

Also, when would we want to do something like this? In relation to CCEU when people are in the mood for training? On a day without any regular activites (so we don't interfere with them if we take more time or something like that)? Randomly whenever people ask about it in mumble?

I might not be able to be as active as an organizer as I was in the past due to lack of time, but I wanted to get the ball rolling properly and spark some discussion. Also, if you're interested in leading or assisting in a training sessions, please let people know here (Wally has already said that he's interested in another thread, so I'm signing him up as well :P)

I think there are a few things we can do to help get people in the air:

    1. VR sessions - follow my leader is a good one for people new to the flight model and controls. Simulated dog fighting is also pretty good before people are ready to graduate to the limited resources of PTS. For the dogfighting, ideally 1 experienced pilot fighting 1 new pilot with the experienced one pointing out weaknesses and tactics.

    2. PTS dog fights - we might need to follow this with some stat padding in an Amp station to get resources back but I don't think SOE is going to object to that. It should mean that we can have quite a lot of actual 'live' dog fights. I'd recommend people practice this 1v1 and in groups and experiment with different weapons. I'd also suggest that people new to dogfighting do some VR practice first.

    3. Flight nights on live - get together as many ESFs and libs as we can and support our comrades on the ground. Note: for this to work and be fun staying alive has to trump helping the ground pounders (sorry). If a strategically important base has heavy AA defences (they usually do) then the flying giraffes and traitors must stay away. Hence not a good one for StratGir or Freedom Fridays I'd say. Can also be combined with having an FOB if there's sufficient interest. For those unfamiliar, FOB is forward operating base and means two sundies with walkers or basilisks and two skyguards. The FOB is located near but away from the main action and provides a place for aircraft to come back for ammo and a quick repair from the friendly engies.

I'd suggest any of this just happens whenver there are people around who fancy it. I fly most of the time these days so if someone sees me in the air and on mumble consider me open to mentoring. Might also be worth scheduling something but it's a bit tricky with so many days already taken up with one thing or another.

Kind of funny that this pops up because I was just thinking last night at work about how I'd like a shot at transporting (if you all didn't mind). I've been doing a bit of practice to get used to landing in certain spots. I figured it might be a good option for me (drop, and then perhaps some manner of orbiting air support) since my lag is quite bad when there's lots of people around, hence why I'm always a medic and crouched near a doorway trying to heal people as they run in. And if not, that's ok too! I just enjoy playing with you all regardless.

I'd definitely be up for this, especially if we're going to need to start putting people on Gal escort duty.

If you need a Gal to escort I'm in. I don't like fl;ying the smaller crafts so much, but any reason to get into my Gal (heehee) is enough for me!

Also Christine, if you want to fly a Gal we can go do some laps in VR at some point. If you like it, be preapred to sink alot of certs into the Skywhale, it sure is one hungry bugger!

Idem, but I could use some practise in dropping and collecting people on the fly. Sadly I won't spend to many certs on that beast though, the other hungry beast called the sundy just keeps stealing all certs I have left over.

I have the perfect exercise for drops in mind Dom, and it can be rolled in with the quickest way to the point in a tower. Will need some volunteers though.

You actually don't have to go to the test server for this. Me, Avaa and SaucyPandy duelled with InappropriateTouching (and among ourselves) in a quiet spot on Amerish last week. We had fire suppression equipped and the duel finished when a combatant caught fire.

To duel a person of the same faction you unlock your vehicles and swap them. This way you do not get grief points when shooting your opponent.

I think we have enough people with certed scythes to allow some sharing so that everyone gets a go with good equipment, which would otherwise of course be a merit of the test server.

Sounds good. I'm going to try to get involved with that if I'm free Monday. It prompts me to add that when we do dogfighting duels I'd like to see them start fairly open. I know there was a pilots championship of something where they start facing each other and hovering. Since we're basically after training and fun I think it would be better to just say "both head to X hex and fight". This adds a stealth/awareness to it which should help reinforce the message that 90% of dogfighting is about getting the drop on the other guy.

Allied aircraft almost always show up on the minimap, so it's less a lesson in stealth and more a lesson in paying attention!
