Sometimes it's nice for the beer to come before the root but don't have too many. Drink responsibly.

We have a thing called dandelion and burdock which is apparently similar, but it is not very common and I have not tasted root beer to compare.

Root Beer is bloody horrible. It's like drinking mouth wash. Bad mouth wash."Halo is designed to make the player think "I look like that, I am macho sitting in my undies with my xbox""

This is the only acceptable brand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBC_Root_Beer
edit: I lie -- I guess A&W is also acceptable.

In other news, I've also recently developed an occasional affinity for Frostop root beer as well as their cream soda.
A&W is alright, but when it comes to the big brands easily available in cans (which I will drink when too lazy to acquire a quirky special variety to drink while feeling elite), I prefer Barqs because 1) it is caffeinated! and 2) it is less creamy than A&W. For drinking by itself, most (not all) of the time I like my Roots Beer to have more of a refreshing pungency. If I want it to be creamy, I will float an ice cream on it!

I gave my nippers a root beer each rather than their usual preferred international mega-beverage.
They didn't speak to me for a week.
I'll try them with a Fentimans Dandelion and Burdock next time we're out....if they ever trust me again.

Root Beer is NOTHING like Dandelion and Burdock.
Even the trad. D&B (rather than the sugary one most people will have encountered) is nowhere near as harsh as Root Beer.
Root Beer tastes like Dentine/Mouthwash - the stuff you wash your mouth with at the dentist FFS ;)

I believe I tried Root Beer once in New York and hated it, was vaguely vanilla flavoured? (Or is that Cream Soda?)
We don't really do Root beer in the UK. You can get the big American brands from some places though, I'm sure.
We do have lots of Ginger Beer though, and the oddness that is Dandelion and Burdock. There's also a recently appeared brand of alcopops called Jeremiah Weed that has some kind of root-flavoured varieties.

What the hell is root beer? Is it even a kind of beer, i.e. does it contain alcohol? As I hear mention of dandelion and burdock and am not happy.
