Paypal refusing to release crowdfunding money

PC indie fighting game Yatagarasu raised nearly $120K in their recent indiegogo campaign. Except none of that matters now because Paypal has decided to withhold the money

what does this mean for the future of crowdfunding when a company like paypal can effectively cancel a crowdfunded game in this manner?

I think it's getting to the point where we have to say, "Don't ever use paypal." Not only this business, but it seems if you are politically opposed to paypal they may also prevent people from giving you money.

Is this something only related to Indiegogo and PayPal or are successful kickstarter projects also getting screwed by this?

I guess this is why Kickstarter don't take PayPal. Well, this and the fees.

The problem is that there aren't many good alternatives that has such mass adoption. What Paypal need is some sort of expedited customer service system for issues like this. Holding tens of thousands of dollars is the kind of thing that can kill indie devs. Paypal needs some sort of better escalation system... at least one better than "Oh snap, Rock Paper Scissors wrote up a story about how we're holding someone's money again! Jeeves! Can you look into it? After lunch? Sure, why not."

In the wake of repeated outcry over frozen accounts, PayPal has announced it will be revisiting its policies to better take into account crowdfunding campaigns.
