    Ascendant - A 2.5D Brawler-Roguelike with Followers

    Hey RPS,

I'm gonna call this a Broguelike. I've been here for a little while and decided it was time to share with you the game me and a small group of developers, known as Hapa Games, have been working on since the past few months. I hope you like it. I will be updating here with new information as our development continues. Any feedback is very, very welcome! Thanks for taking a look :D

    Edited post starts here

Ascendant is a 2.5D side-scrolling brawler that combines the depth and randomness of roguelikes, and the fast-paced action of beat 'em ups. The game is being developed for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

You, as the Ascendant, suddenly manifest in a world populated by raging fanatics, devout zealots, and wild beasts, furious at your arrival into their plane. You are a challenge to the rule of the older, tyrannical gods, and they will stop at nothing to eliminate you. The world has succumbed to their might and you must travel through the land gaining strength, enhancing your abilities, and gathering an army of followers to oppose their reign.

    Gameplay
Ascendant is very much a brawler at heart. You will constantly be in the middle of combat as you progress through the game, bashing your way through the throngs of fervent zealots, rabid beasts, and indomitable bosses. Additionally, the game takes a lot of features from one of our favorite genres – roguelikes – and puts them to good use. Permadeath, character enhancement, random drops, dynamically assembled content; these things and more are featured in Ascendant.

    • Brawler Combat – Martial weapons are the primary way that the Ascendant dispatches enemies. You will be able to performground and air combos to slice your way through the frenzied hordes of beasts and fanatics. Additionally, enemies can be launched into the air using a chargeable power attack which can then be followed up by juggling with more air combos and ranged spells.
    • Aspects of the Gods – Aspects are part of a socket system that actively enhances a player's weapon, spell, or armor. Each aspect has their own unique characteristics and placing them into different sockets will yield varying effects. For example, an ice-based Aspect on a weapon would freeze enemies that are launched into the air while the same Aspect socketed into the Ascendant’s armor would allow for a slow-fall effect to be activated during descent.
    • Breaths - Players can pick up Breaths as kind of a panic button. These are one-time use items that are like mini-Aspects. They embody an Aspect but only for a brief period of time.

    Other Features

    • Multiple unlockable characters with different strengths and weaknesses to suit any playstyle
    • Random special events keep the gameplay fresh each playthrough. You will never know what to expect in the next room
    • Hundreds of weapons to wield each with unique characteristics allowing you to adjust and adapt to the swarm of foes attempting to stop you
    • Dynamically constructed environments means that the structure of every level will consist of randomly assembled rooms. Each level places the boss, treasure, and arenas differently so you will always be rewarded for exploring the depths of the world

You can see more screenshots, concept art, and information about our game as it is being developed on any of these other forums and sites:

For ScreenshotSaturday we posted a couple of gifs on our website. Here is the website: Devblog

What we are showing below is our Aspect system in action. Aspects are like spells that enhance your character in various ways. When you pick up an Aspect you will have the option of socketing it into either the weapon, armor, or spell of the character. Each has a different effect so there will be a lot of room for experimenting with different builds.

So, this forum didn't like my gifs. I uploaded them on imgur and have provided the links below. They are worth it!

This first one is what we're tentatively calling the Chaos Aspect socketed to a spell.

    Aspect - Chaos Spell

This second Aspect gives a slow fall effect when players hold down the spell cast button.

    Aspect - Slow Fall

Thanks for taking a look! Don't forget to check out the other stuff we've posted:

This picture represents a huge step in creating player-defined goals. Exploring the world can yield great rewards through shopkeepers, treasure, and event rooms. There is enough variation in items, aspects, and weapons to allow for vastly different character builds. The enemies are much harder now and their behavior is greatly improved so it is very important to find these items for character enhancement.

Some better Spring level shots. Springshots if you will. Zing!

Every environment is dynamically assembled. Here, our Spring assets come together to give a different setting. We still have some things to work out but it is coming along.

Aspects are found in hidden places like treasure rooms. Aspects are part of a socket system that enhances the player's abilities. You can place an Aspects in either your weapon, armor, or spell and receive a different passive ability or bonus.

An exploding-type Aspect socketed into a spell!

Like I said, we still have some things to work out. These spikes are supposed to be in the Winter level but we are working on it!

If you like what you see, you can find more information on our website, Twitter, Facebook, and IndieDB Page.

This game looks great. I don't know if it's a shame it's kickstarting so close to Guacamelee's pc release or a blessing.

It's definitely one or the other. There is no middle ground there. I'm really glad that you've taken a look at what we're doing though :)

It's about time I introduced you to our lead designer, Nick, and his infamous beard. In the video below he talks about Ascendant's Aspect and Combat systems.

I hope that was enlightening! Also, if you haven't already checked it out you should take a look at our Kickstarter and Greenlight pages. Anything, whether it is a small pledge, a Yes vote, or simply saying hi to us here, is immensely supportive in what we're trying to do with

Last 24 hours to back Ascendant

In our final few hours on Kickstarter, I'd like to share with you guys a bit about Ascendant and who we are.
Ascendant is a 2.5D roguelike-brawler where the player takes on the role of a demigod attempting to usurp the tyranny of an older, angrier god.

The roguelike design of the game means permadeath, unlockables, procedurally generated environments, loot, and enemy variants. The brawler design means that you are constantly in the thick of things smacking enemies in the face with your sword, quickly dodging to avoid getting hit, and knowing when to strike. Figuring out when your enemies are at a disadvantage and when to unleash a barrage against them is extremely important.

To give you an idea of combat, here is a recent gameplay video:

The meat of the game comes by enhancing your character through Aspects. Aspects are items that you can equip that change the way that you play the game and are different depending on if whether you socket them into your weapon, armor, or spell. For example, one Aspect socketed into a weapon might do a damage-over-time effect while putting the same Aspect into your armor may grant double-jump.

A ton more information on the Kickstarter page itself.

So, a little more about us..Ascendant was originally an idea that our group was toying around with while we were finishing up our final projects in graduate school. We knew we wanted to make a beat-em up/roguelike hybrid experience but didn't really have a solid story for it, just a ton of ideas for engaging mechanics and features. After iterating over prototypes, art, design, and a bunch of other things we found the core gameplay. Three months into development we now have a solid alpha, something we enjoy playing, and want to share it with everyone. It still needs a lot of work and polish but we are hitting our stride and will power through the holiday season to get the game where it needs to be.
