    Pinball FX

Inspired by Eight Rooks in the Bargain Thread here

    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/foru...l=1#post383556

Some of us have leapt at the current HB Weekly deal for this (or already had it) and we're planning to stare at each-other's scores and say "How the fuck did they do that then?", quite a lot ;)

These are the profile pages of people who've already posted/invited me - I must have missed some people but this is the starter-for-10 ;)

Awww, all on account of li'l old me? Added or accepted you lot.

I'm really not that great - my best is a meagre 80 million plus on Sorceror's Lair (on my tablet, not on PC), and that only because it's the waaay easiest table of the lot. Still fun, and my complete inability to use nudge properly means I keep losing balls down the left-hand side, but it's got two multiball triggers, each of which are a struggle not to get, and I can beat - as opposed to just survive through - almost all of the missions. I can hit 30 million or so on World War Hulk (can't do any of the missions, but it's relatively easy to start lengthy combos going) and Clone Wars (a fairly easy table despite the speed it plays at, a few missions I can rack up points on - if not beat).

But other than that I struggle to clear 10. Too many of the Zen original tables have really small main play areas and very fast returns, which I'm not that fond of (shan't be bothering anyone's scores on Paranormal, say). I do like some of the harder, more technical setups - I'm not very good at Boba Fett, I don't have a prayer of actually finishing any of the missions, but I find it hugely gratifying to just start them, going from dinky tens and hundreds to suddenly unlocking the bounties and firing off seven-figure shots.

Oh, and I seem to be one of the unlucky peeps for whom Spiderman is hopelessly bugged, and I wish that was a terrible joke because I really liked what I saw of that table. But nope; ball gets permanently stuck on one of the missions, Zen apparently can't reproduce/don't understand the bug and haven't done anything to fix it in months. Sadface. I know it's not a perfect game, I've seen more than a few annoying physics glitches on the Android version (Clone Wars is prone to getting the ball stuck under the flippers, and the ball save on that table occasionally seems impossible to return) but it's still frustrating.

Add me too, Steam name in sig. Had a couple of goes, not doing too great! Which table would anyone recommend to start with? My 4 year old son was playing the pinball game in XP last weekend so figured he may like to try these too... just a bit worried he'll do a lot better than me.

Sorceror's Lair is far and away the easiest table, I think - I haven't played absolutely all of them but like I said above:

It has two chances to trigger a multiball (pretty sure most other tables only have the one, or at least just one obvious one), and you don't have to do anything especially difficult to open either one (the first needs a very simple aimed shot then a moderately difficult one, the second needs repeated aimed shots but it's pretty easy just to get them at random whacking the ball around the playing field). Once you get a multiball going, again, this is a table where you can just concentrate on keeping the balls in play and still get quite a few points.

It's pretty easy to trigger the missions just by randomly firing the ball around, and if you can't beat the missions, it's fairly easy just to wait out the clock on them. None of them do anything especially crazy with the ball, none of them need you to do insane trick shots or anything like that, none of them are very long, and several of them won't take a life off if you lose the ball - two of them use hidden mini-tables and one of them a 2D tilting maze, and if you fail these you're just dumped back on the main table.

Unless you really go absolutely nuts there's not much you can do to speed the ball up to uncontrollable levels or anything like that, and very few of the obstacles or ramps will fire really tough returns back at you if you can't make the shot. The only tricky bit is very occasionally the bumpers over on the left will dump your ball out of play for what seems like no reason at all, but unlike most of the other tables there are very few times you have to remember "No, don't hit the ball like this, or chances are it'll bounce out of reach and I won't be able to stop it draining".

EDIT: trumpet, man, jeez. That's my first "How did they do that?", I think - if you can break 10 million on Pasha I'm not sure why you haven't beaten me at everything else. Ugh. That table frustrates me. Broke 40 million on World War Hulk, though - finally beat Evacuate Manhattan - and 18 million or so on Fear Itself - beat the Serpent, wheee! But I have to admit that was pure luck, just three good bounces in the minigame in a row.

I also need more highscores to compete against, otherwise I might think I'm getting good at this game ;)

    Added everyone who posted.

And God damn I have no idea how I managed to do that. Took back a couple of highscores and then holy Christ, broke 60 million on Boba Fett - three successful low-level bounties (nailed the last one with less than a second to spare) and a multiball. And I think I can do better (though knowing my luck it'll take me a while) - the first two were on one ball, and I was so damn tired I just went to pieces, whiffed a return and then lost the next ball as well before focusing enough to get to 60. Still, that was one hell of a lot of fun, even if someone beats it by the time I've woken up.

Seeing as I've only two on my current friends list that play, I'll join the party - until your high scores all start getting me depressed of course.

150 million+ on Sorceror's Lair? I don't think you've got anything to be depressed about there (yet). I could maybe get that if I lasted two loops through the story or more, but I doubt that's happening any time soon.

Well, it appears that this thread has finally got me to come out from lurking beyond the veil. I took the plunge on this as well, because well, Pinball!

Not sure how much of a challenge I will be. It appears that my first attempt at each table yields a good score, and then each subsequent play is lower than the previous.

Add me! Here's my Steam Profile (Danners with a photo of Raz (Goggalor!) from Psychonauts.

Quite a few games to get there I can tell you. The trick is to get the multi balls with some regularity. I've a freind with close to 300 Million on Spiderman - I'm no where near working out that one yet.

He says, and then breaks it on his very next play session. I swear I didn't plan that! Christ, my hands are still shaking.

I only got it because I was getting angry at myself for trying to be so damn perfect, so the next ball 1 I missed I told myself nope, keep going and... well. Had a 10X bonus coming out of the first loop, too. Still went to pieces yet again after I finally lost that ball, and then I was just so hyper I couldn't get back into the groove and balls 3, 4 and 5 all went down the drain in short order. Oh welp. Room to improve, I guess.

Eh, I'm not sure about that - I can hit the first multiball, the gargoyle's cage, pretty easily and the second, the sorceror's lab, a fair few times - but actually controlling all three balls after that is the trick for me. That 170 million I just got could have been higher if I'd had a few more multiballs pay out - a couple barely got a single bonus and didn't get a jackpot.

I've not grabbed the bundle just yet, but fully intend to. I have been playing on Sorceror's and Epic Quest.
