... where else do you get your gaming news, commentary, media, etc.?
For the purposes of this thread let's omit sources dedicated to a single game or which are updated only infrequently. Not that sites like Sirlin.net aren't great, but they're not really what we're looking for here. And if you feel like adding some writings as to why a particular source engaged your attention, that would be awesome. Mayhaps through this wondrous mechanism of information exchange we might discover new and exciting publications and further bloat their ad-views accordingly.
For my part, if RPS is #1 then Eurogamer is #2. I came for the relatively clean layout at a time when IGN and Gamespot were engaged in the web design equivalent of Nazi medical experimentation, and I stayed for the well-written reviews, previews and features. And of course various bits of the RPS Hivemind have a habit of sneaking off and writing over there as well. I can even put up with the fact that the site's screenshot system appears to be about as compatible with Chrome as it is with an arc welder. Oh, and trying to stream videos from the site (at least from Australia) is an exercise in frustration. But still.
More specialist sources and publications I frequent include ...
- Gametrailers (for the downloads, although for the sake of compatability I'm increasingly turning to Youtube+JDownloader)
- Ausgamers (for when I desire to download patches/demos etc. at something like the 2.5MB/sec my connection is ostensibly good for.
- Extra Credits over at Escapist Magazine (a weekly 5-10 minute webseries; intelligent discussion of various issues pertaining to the industry, community, game design and development. Here's a recent example of their work: Extra Credits - The Myth of the Gun.)
- Penny Arcade (almost an obligatory inclusion I guess, even if Tycho's so-laid-back-my-head-is-below-the-steering-wheel-watch-me-change-lanes-without-signalling brand of eloquence does occasionally make me want to punch him in the face.)
From the few glimpses I've seen I've been impressed by Giant Bomb, but it seems heavily community driven and I'm not sure I have time for it. I should probably make an effort to include it in the weekly rotation or something though.
