How to succeed at Deus Ex: Human Revolution boss battles (spoilers marked)

Greetings, gentlemen. I have heard that quite a few of you have trouble with the bosses in the new Deus Ex. So had I and I cursed a lot. They are the worst part of an otherwise great game and you shouldn't let them ruin your fun. I originally wrote this for a friend but I figured I might as well put an extended and actually readable version up here.

    Weapons:
Human Revolution is a lot like the first Deus Ex when it comes to weapons. Lots of fancy guns but most of them are either too weak, too wasteful, too big or any combination thereof.

10mm Pistol: In regular gameplay, absolutely overpowered - mainly because of the armor piercing upgrade. I'm not quite sure how armor piercing affects bosses but it just doesn't have the raw damage output that other weapons have. Don't bring a scalpel to a knife fight.
Combat Rifle: In most shooters, the assault rifle is your bread-and-butter gun. Here, not so much. Once the first armored enemies appear, it loses its punch and you'll only ever use it if you run out of pistol ammo.
Shotgun: Pretty much the same as the Combat Rifle. The damage output is okay but the short effective range is just too crippling.
Machine Pistol: Combining the worst qualities of the pistol and the Combat Rifle. Don't bother.
    Crossbow: Terrible all around.
Sniper Rifle: Outclassed by the Tranquilizer Rifle in regular gameplay. You simply don't have enough space to use it effectively in boss battles.
Rocket Launcher: Very underwhelming. It's plain overkill for regular gameplay, too large to keep it for boss battles and in the end, it doesn't achieve much more than a frag nade.
Heavy Rifle: Great weapon with enormous damage output. The better Combat Rifle.
Revolver: If the 10mm is a scalpel then this gun is a chainsaw. It's basically a cross between the Sniper Rifle and the Shotgun and generally the best weapon for everything that doesn't die from a pistol headshot. This is where you want to put your upgrades.
Laser Rifle: Absolute gamebreaker. Pretty much an improved Heavy Rifle. That can shoot through walls. Requires the Smart Vision aug to shine.
Plasma Rifle: The last and the worst weapon.
Stun Gun: You can stunlock the first two bosses to death with this but it will take about 25-30 shots. Otherwise it will just stun them like an EMP nade.
Tranquilizer Rifle: Doesn't seem to have any effect on bosses.
    PEPS: "

    Augmentations:

I played through on the highest difficulty without any of the combat orientated augmentations. The Typhoon aug is incredibly powerful and fully upgraded does seem to do twice the damage of a frag nade. The damage reduction aug keeps you alive a lot longer and the EMP shield is also very useful. The recoil reduction augs barely matter but it's nice to have them anyway.

    First boss battle

Not too hard, really. You should use the revolver for this fight. His weapon seems to be identical to a Heavy Rifle and he can also hurl frag nades at you. Additional, he can grab you, which hurts a lot.
Start out throwing a grenade of your own. Don't go left, you won't be able to escape from there. Either use the barricade in front of you or one of the pillars as cover and headshot him with the revolver. Keep your distance and watch out for more nades of his. Either throw the barrels directly at him or shoot them when he is near them. He should go down within a reasonable amount of time. If you keep getting killed, try spamming nades.

    Second boss battle

You really want to have the EMP shield for this. She starts out charging at you. Jump immediately left or right to avoid the blast radius. She's a lot more agile than the first boss but her dual MPs hurt not quite as much. Also, she will be cloaked for most of the fight but that's not much of a problem. The water will reveal her movement as will the Smart Vision aug.
Either use the Revolver or the Heavy Rifle (you find one in the last room before the boss arena), move backwards and shot whenever she appears. Lay out mines, if you have any.
There is also a trick to this. Whenever you shoot those large panels at the wall, they will emit an electric burst that will apply the effect of an EMP nade to everything in front of it. That can hurt you just as much as it hurts her but the EMP shield protects you. It's really hard to not take any damage in this fight so have at least some meds ready.

    Third boss battle

If you have the Laser Rifle, the Smart Vision augmentation and not accepted the chip exchange back in Shanghai, you have already won. He cannot shoot through walls, you can. About a full clip of the Laser Rifle will kill him.
If you are a poor fool like me, you will have a Shotgun as your only lethal weapon, exchanged the chip and additionally play on the highest difficulty, you are pretty much screwed. Exchanging the chip will not only disable all your augmentations for this fight (besides regeneration) but it will also apply the EMP effect throughout it so you have no way of knowing how much health you have at the moment or how many rounds you have in your weapon. You can still use meds from your inventory.
He is cloaked most of the time like the second boss but additionally jumps around and if he appears in front of you, you are as good as dead. His Plasma Rifle kills you almost instantly. Additionally, he somehow can throw two grenades at once. The only way to defeat him in a straight firefight and the exchanged chip is either savescumming or cornering him with grenades (which is how I did it).

    Fourth boss battle
Easy as pie. Take out the turrets first. After that, push the buttons and kill the drones. At that time she will release a couple of zombies as well as small security robots. Not much of a challenge. Additionally, the floor will emit electric bursts at times but the EMP shield will negate it. Either hack the consoles or enter the password, then open the door and kill Zhao. The end.

Third boss battle was the one I had the most trouble with, had to reload a bunch of times to get it right. I used the revolver with the explosive upgrade to take him out. What I did was stick to the corners of the room, shoot him once when he appears then run like hell to the next corner to avoid his plasma rifle and grenades, rince and repeat, it took about 10-15 hits probably to take him down. Very boring fight, but I got him in the end. I had also changed the chip and this was on normal difficulty.

    Third boss in 20 seconds:
Third boss was the easiest ever for me: I EMPd him in the first ten seconds (with a single grenade), then shot four five grenades from the grenade launcher (unmodded). it was over in 20 seconds. on normal.

I was frustrated by the first boss on the hardest difficulty, but he was easy on the middle difficulty. The method I used was to throw a concussion grenade at him, empty an assault rifle clip into his head, repeat.

Even easier with a shotgun, only one emp or conc gren necessary.

For the third boss, you can avoid his shots through jumping over a few walls (requires the high jump augmentation) and then settle on one of the pillars in the corners of the outer walls (if this makes sense to you). If you crouch and place yourself correctly, the boss will shoot the wall without hitting you. It helps to use a gas grenade at this point. This and a few headshots from an upgraded 10mm pistol were enough for me on normal difficulty. Obviously, this requires that you didn't take the exchange chip. Don't know if you can get on the walls without the high jumping augmentation.

Often, I felt a bit helpless during boss battles and that one encounter wot-requires-you-to-be-real-fast with my stealthy setup. But I made it through with "just" my 10mm, a Combat Rifle (which was rather helpful during the last boss battle - takes out one of the pot "inhabitants" in one go) and some grenades and mines I picked up during the course of the game. Since you don't want to raise the alarm as a stealthy Jensen, you won't find many uses for mines anyways.

Oh, and one thing to add to the last boss battle: EMP grenades open the pots, so you don't need to use your hands to push the buttons like a sucker.

Combat rifle is actually really useful for bosses, and it gets laser sight and silencer which make it useful for fighting at longer ranges than the pistol can, if you have recoil dampening augs.

My tactic for the 2nd and 3rd bosses (after dying a lot trying to do them "properly"):

Put a mine down somewhere they run past. Any kind will do. Grenades work too but they're harder to aim. It will stun them for long enough to unload the combat rifle into their head. As long as every shot goes on target they should die

Final boss I'm totally confused about, because it was so laughably easy. I don't know if I managed to break it somehow.

I ran straight into the middle under the turrets, where they couldn't hit me. Opened all the things, shotgun to the head, knocked out the zombie guards. Fired my laser rifle into Zhao from across the room. Didn't see any security robots or electrified floor, and I didn't need to hack anything.

I cheesed my way through the 3rd boss fight due to his awful AI, though I didn't know the laser rifle shot through walls.

In the middle of the room is a big glass wall, if you are at one end of it and nip to one side away from him, he'll climb over allowing you to get a few shots off. As soon as he lands pop to the other side and watch him climb again. Rinse and repeat.

    Attention pacifists:
Its possible to save the girls in the last fight. You just have to be quick about tranqing them, otherwise they wake up again. Also, shooting the laser from cover is 100% accurate.

@QuantaCat: Wow, really nice find. I am impressed every time I read something like this. Does one shot from the tranquilizer gun suffice for that?

A bit off-topic, concerning the last boss battle: I find it hilarious that the old man keeps some young girls locked in his basement, tied to a gigantic supercomputer that apparently tortures / pillages their minds. Way to improve humanity.

Yes, one shot does the trick. And yes, I agree with you. In no way should darrow seriously survive.

    Third boss battle

Strangely enough, my augmentations *did* seem though work albeit the chip exchange. Screen was flickering of course, but pressing F1-F4 activated the different gadgets.

Anyway, my trick was to run on the outermost circle and throw mines at the intersections, close to the statue. A few frags and the laser did the rest.
Play Arma2:CO with us. (It isn't nearly as difficult as you might think.)

The third boss was easy, killed it in about 15 seconds without hp loss

I didn't take the biochip downgrade, entered the room stealthed with fully modified shotgun armed and charged to spam his face with pellets. He tried to shoot in blind, but it was pretty easy to see where he's pointing the gun and thereby avoid the business end of it. The shotgun only had to be reloaded once and took about 20 poorly aimed close by shots to kill him. Three energy bars were consumed in the process.

The 2nd boss also got a facefull by the shotgun, although I incapacitated her with stun gun each time. I ran off to reload my stun gun and shotgun (if necessary) each time when she recovered

My ridiculously upgraded 10mm pistol was the only way I could get through the boss fights. I tried other weapons but I just couldn't manage to kill the buggers with them.
"You go up to a man, and you say, "How are things going, Joe?" and he says, "Oh fine, fine — couldn't be better." And you look into his eyes, and you see things really couldn't be much worse. When you get right down to it, everybody's having a perfectly lousy time of it, and I mean everybody. And the hell of it is, nothing seems to help much." - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Second boss is stupid easy if you have a fully-upgraded Typhoon (the way I played the game, I had more than enough Praxis points to get everything I wanted, so I said "Why the hell not?").

Third boss I got the new chip which gimped my Adam Jensen, but I had the exploding rounds for my revolver. I just ran around the room like an idiot and blasted away at him whenever I had a glimpse of him. The guided rounds for the assault rifle can help you out too, as you can blindfire with it and the bullets will still guide into his head.

Alright, the fourth boss is ridiculously easy.

I only had to wait to get in the blind areas of the turrets (there's a large gap between each turret) to approach the platform in the middle to do the button pressing. After that I charged the the window which behind Zhao is and toasted her with the laser rifle through the window, but also breaking the window in the process. Any gun can do the window and nobody will bother you while shooting at the window.

I found it terribly easy to use cover and shooting blind with the laser, as it is 100% accurate even while shooting blind.

Now that I just finished that first god-awful forced-combat boss battle, I have to say that DX:HR has the worst cover mechanic for combat that I've ever come across.

Hold down button for cover. Hold down second button to peek from cover. Press third button to aim weapon, but only after peeking-from-cover animation is complete. Press FOURTH button to fire.

If you explore the control options, you can select how you enter and exit cover, either making it a toggle or a deadmans switch by default. You can also rebind the keys for it.

I'm also glad to hear about being able to tranq the 3 chicks in #4, that was nagging me on my first play through since I discovered (from reading wiki) that you can use laser rifle and bypass much of the fight via shooting through wall.
