Still waiting on 2.8 with proper, finished single-window mode..

Don't forget, on certain operating systems, having to click once to move focus to the window and then having to click again to do whatever you want to do in that window, like switching tools. It's really annoying.

Also sometimes the windows disappear and I can't find the option to open them again.
I think I stoped using Photoshop in 2001, and since then I use Gimp daily at work. but then, I don't mind much the "fighting the palettes".
GIMP's interface is pretty horrible, and it seems to lack certain basic drawing tools that might be found in say, MS Paint.
That said, I have managed to get tolerable results out of it.
I was not aware you could get Photoshop from a different place than TPB. That said, I like my GIMP.

I really don't get Adobes approach tbh. The European pricing of their applications is absurd, but to be quite frank given that everyone and their mom pirates the shit out of it for home use you have to wonder why they don't think 'how can we make all these pirates into legitimate customers?'. Democratize the pricing on everything and drop it by 90%. Make the suites modular (so for example buy illustrator & photoshop, but skip indesign if you don't need it for example) and sell it through digital portals (like Steam) or make it a subscription based service. What they'd lose in the top end they's make up for in volume.

I vaguely recall an interview / report about that and their own conclusion from internal research and leaving "phone home" code in pirate releases was that they get so much more from corporate customers than they would from the average home user that they can't afford to lower the price.
(There IS a two tier scheme already in place, as a student license is much cheaper?)
And because everyone and their dog pirates it instead of using inkscape, paint.net or the GIMP, they don't have to worry about the corporate customers not having a steady pool of trained and comfortably indoctrinated artists. So nobody moves away.

I got GIMP for free and it scared and confused my poor, basically-competent-at-using-Photoshop-for-simple-things brain. I still have it on my home PC but I don't think I've ever successfully used it for anything complex enough to actually need GIMP for.
Also, the US price for the Adobe software is ridiculous, let alone the UK one. They do realise that when they sell those bytes, they still have them to sell again? It's not a one-time deal, Adobe.
Hitting Tab will hide/show the floating windows.
As far as some basic drawing tools go: I think instead of lacking them, you have to use several tools to get the same effect. AdaptableGIMP has a nice video that shows this (plus some nifty AdaptableGIMP stuff):

How does GIMP perform with about 600 layers in a document?

"Student pricing" sound to me like "The first dope is free" for crack. People like President Weasel shows why this is a bad idea: Learning how to use this type of tool takes long and is hard. If you learn Photoshop, you will have very little desire to "break" the addiction, and use anything else. But It does cost 1600€. Pirating is not a desirable option, because perpetuate problems. What problems perpetuates? the status quo. GIMP interface being shit. And Photoshop being expensive. I hate this status quo.

Also, I looked it up: the local price is 2.735,81€. That's 3.847,92$ or 2.408,02£. So much for that.
