During my 3-year tenure with EVE, I spent more than a year in a little corp. The leaders were an Italian guy, his son, and one of his friends: these guys were some of the most honest people I've ever interacted with in video games: they organised resources and ships to be given to new members, made sure out combat pilots were equipped (often from their own pocket when corp funds were running low), and generally were EVE-gentlemen.

So yeah, it does sound like an unfair generalisation.

Obviously they were running a long con on you.

Speaking of fishing villages, what I would like to see is for people to convert St. Pierre and Miquelon into the games development capital of the world.

Then I could move there and actually make a living. =)

Not to dismiss your anecdotal evidence out of hand, but to be entirely fair to myself, it sounds like I've met a lot more nice Italians than you. I mean, since I clearly specified that only 90% of them were displaying the unfavourable characteristics, that leaves us with a nice round 10% that are displaying "reasonable" behaviour. (well, as reasonable as you'd expect a bloodthirsty Orc Warrior to be when raiding and pillaging enemy strongholds.)

Given that my stay in Azeroth lasted just over five years, and that these encounters were happening perhaps 3 or 4 times a week on average, that leaves me with quite a large pool to draw my data from. If we add your two Italians, and round in the most favourable way possible, that probably takes us from 90% "Scum Factor" down to 89% at most.

Still not exactly a good statistic. (And that's leaving aside any consensus I've taken from dozens upon dozens of other players I have discussed this gravely important matter with, which is entire unanimous.)

    SCIENCE!

Have we entered a timewarp to the 19th century? I mean, there are a lot of modern, socially acceptable prejudices to choose from. Anti-Italianism is quite the throwback.

I dunno. Hating the French never goes out of style.

Discussing about european partners is a bit less flawed. If you like Dead Island, and you play in spain, like me, you are going to meet a lot of french in a week-end playing. And a lot of englishmen, and people from other countries. This time the anecdotal evidence can cover 20 or 30 different players. You can also play other games, in MMO's, where you may have similar experiences. So your anecdotal evidence extend to 200, 300, maybe 2000.
    So lemme get this straight:

Men have a hard time getting a decent sample size of women - who are a little more than half the population of the world - but find it fairly easy to get a sizable exposure to the habits of foreign nationals.

    There's that headache again.

That you see womens on the streets or the bus don't give you any information. Is sharing a space with a women that you true know her. And some mens only do this 1 or 0 ( other way more ). Most men only know her wife, and have no idea how really are other womens.

Say... "Womens like to be spanked on the butt",... is the type of lame generalization you see in a discussion about genre.

Many men talk to women as they would do men, if you can believe it Tei. Some women are even to be found online (in fora and the like), and men are often online as this thread indicates, and they talk to people there.

In the name of science, I will spend the next week sampling women for you, and I will compare them to WoW-playing Italians. Let's see who comes out best.

(Disclaimer: For fairness sake all sampling will be done via internet. For the sake of practicality, photographic samples will be used in place of live MMORPG players - as everybody knows that there are no women on the internet.)

    Wish me luck!

There is only one science, and it loves each and every one of us equally.

I'm from Sweden, and I don't think "national character" or the like is ever a useful explanatory factor; just another name for unhelpful stereotypes and sweeping generalizations. To take just an obvious example, Mojang's approach to game design has very little in common with something like the modern-day DICE; and if Swedish dev teams happen to produce a higher proportion of noteworthy games than would seem statistically likely given our country's tiny population that can surely be easily explained simply by pointing to our great IT infrastructure and an above-average education system. The rest, as everwhere else in the world, is merely a case of specific individuals being pathetically nerdy, in a good way.
