It took a while but Haken's The Mountain finally grew on me.

This is always what I imagined Dream Theater would sound like if they didn't start sucking.

    - If the sound of Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings" makes you think of Kharak burning instead of the Vietnamese jungle, most of your youth happened during the 90s. -

    Diaphane - Metastable

    Long sample here.

Might be the first album I'm going to buy since the new How To Destroy Angels.

Has anyone listened to the latest offering from Goldfrapp - Tales Of Us? Initially and without giving it too much attention, I thought it was pleasant stuff certainly more reminiscent of their far more alternative stuff like in Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree. In listening back to it a few times, I can barely recall a few tracks. Maybe I just need to give it that intensive listening to? Probably. Here's, I think, my favourite of it.

Again, on initial impressions, there's nothing on this album that really equals some of the best stuff they've done on the more alternative scene, like Lovely Head, Utopia, or Cologne Cerrone Houdini (although I've always seen it as Moudini, but the internet seems to disagree). Again, this album is perfectly enjoyable and it's definitely a step-up from the previous album, but I don't think they've been quite as good since Supernatural. I hope I'm wrong and my opinions improve.

Soon up, the new Lissie and Pretty Reckless albums...

Always been very off and on with Goldfrapp, which I guess is a credit to them trying different styles. Not all of it clicks with me, and I'm not sure about this one from the songs I've heard. Alison Goldfrapp definitely has the voice for this more slow-burning stuff. Some of it strays into being a bit bland, but it could be a grower. Although I can see myself having a few listens on spotify and not going back to it.

PSA: The newest Dream Theater album is fucking awful. If you want great contemporary prog, listen to Haken's The Mountain. It's the best album I have listened to since Motorpsycho's The Death Defying Unicorn (which I consider a modern classic). Silent Machine by Twelve Foot Ninja and The Parallax II by Between The Buried And Me are up there, too.

Anyways, speaking of legendary prog bands that just came out with an album but don't suck:

Okay, it does sound a lot like Tool even if they arguably did it first. I freaking love Ray Alder's vocals, though.

There also seems to be a new Subrosa album. I need to investigate those rumours.

Hey Similar, thanks for re-introducing me to "When my love comes down". Had forgotten how much I like that one. :)

Folks! The debut album by Chvrches was released yesterday, and showed up on Spotify today. Give it a spin, it's good.

I've been streaming the Chvrches album. Definitely got past my initial cringing at their name and they really do justify the hype. Good album from start to finish (the tracks were the bloke has main vocals are a bit forgettable but still decent).

I've also been listening to Jon Hopkin's Immunity quite a bit (having bounced off it earlier in the year) and I'm loving it after repeated listens. Perfect for sticking on in the background in the evening and just enjoying.

Look what's happened to the Young Knives!

This is a facinating interview about how they went from a major label to getting back control and producing their own album. Very upfront.
