Based on cover alone I bought this for myself while browsing the folk section looking for a Christmas present

Wasn't disappointed it's excellent, would love to see these folk live:

    Another legend gone.

OK, two more because she was so awesome posting just the two would be silly. For what it's worth, there is not a single person in current pop music that has anything like what she had. Beyonce is a pale imitation. Sasha Fierce, indeed.

This has just made me realise there is a large Etta James shaped hole in my record collection. Of course there are many obvious holes in my record collection but listening to these reminds me that it's one that most definitely should be filled.

Her version of I Just Want to Make Love to You is of course absolutely brilliant, particularly her delivery of the opening line.

With Etta James I basically heard a few songs, fell in love, and listened to every single thing I could find. There are plenty of amazing singers from that time but she is at the very top of my list. Ella Fitzgerald and Irma Thomas run her close, though.

Any recommendations for albums to start with, or which are the best compilation albums (because if I am buying to fill a gap I often resort to greatest hits, largely because I'd run out of money way too fast otherwise!)?

Yeah I think for artists from that era, compilations are the way to go because singles dominated and you might as well get a collection of the best ones. The Very Best Of Etta James: The Chess Singles is a great deal, stupid amount of songs for cheap.

Recommending albums is a bit harder because she sang so many styles it comes down to your taste. I'd go for At Last! and Tell Mama along with the live album Rocks The House if you want to ruin your tolerance for any other singers live shows.

Then if you want even more get Etta James: Who's Blue? Rare Chess Recordings Of The 60s and 70s for all the awesome b-sides and rare tracks.

Also, I hear you about money. There's just too much sometimes. That compilation would be ideal I'd say, plus Rocks The House because it will 100% guaranteed put a huge smile on your face.

    Hi............

Right now I listen to the lonely island album. yes some of the songs are quite funny, but on the other hand I did not need to listen to a full album of them.
