Prometheus (2012). hum. It completely failed to make me care about the characters and the plot isn't strong enough to stand on its own, so I was not impressed.

Act of Valor (2012). This is kind of like a very long Modern Warfare cutscene. The acting is pretty iffy, though it helps some that it's often hard to understand what people say, and there's rather too much military pathos too which gets quite painful. Nothing wrong with the action scenes, though.
The most interesting thing about it is that I read that everything was filmed with Canon EOS SLR cameras, to keep the budget down (everything must have been spent on military hardware). There's nothing wrong with the film quality, so that's apparently a viable alternative now.

Ended up watching Barton Fink a couple of days ago. T'is a strange beast. It doesn't fit into any genre, but perhaps that's what you should expect from a Coen Brothers' film. Anyhow, a successful playwright is asked to write a film for Hollywood and that's before it goes completely off the rails. It's incredibly surreal, as its grounding in reality seems to dissipate as the film goes on. Well acted, fantastic dialogue (the police officers are scene stealers in the few times they appear) and great visuals. The plot is very clever, with several loose-ends, but with enough nods to have a good idea of what does happen. Very enjoyable, if weird.

I watched it shortly after it was released and it's sort of been stuck in my mind since then. It is pretty special.


Just watched The Darkest Hour (2011). I barely survived the first fifteen minutes, but after that it got better. I had expected it to be pretty awful from reading about it, but it wasn't that bad.

I don't watch alien and predator movies for the characters, I watch it because I want to see some Aliens doing some badass things, I can't remember any interesting characters from Ridley's movies, besides Weaver because they're all just grunts ready to me killed off by aliens.

The new Lawrence of Arabia restoration is fucking incredible. One of the best blu-rays ever.

There's a 3D scene from Lawrence in Prometheus. I believe the entire movie would look great in this format. The shot composition suits it well.

Just saw Time Bandits for the first time and quite liked it, a very nice and amusing tale with that typical 80s charm. Robin Hood was jolly good in this one! And I liked how it bordered between a kid and adult movie, with some interesting ideas and concepts sparkled here and there like creation and free will. But I'm not really sure what to make out of the end, em.

I loved the trailer for Holy Motors and went to see the film yesterday. It's as amazing as it is baffling, probably also one of the very few "arthouse" films I really, really liked.

I've had the long weekend to myself and used it as an opportunity to catch up on stuff. I believe I've mentioned previously in this thread that I asked some friends for a list of their recommended films that I should watch. The list is...not insubstantial. One person alone makes up the combination of my own list and two other's. Still, I like to think I'm true to my word and endeavoured to get through them all, despite there being some films I've never heard of before and some starring Adam Sandler. Anyhow, got through four so far this weekend. I may go for one or two more tomorrow. Who knows?

Easy A is a comedy/coming-of-age film, that is pleasantly witty in the former and nonchalant about the latter. It also pays a lot of homage to 80's films of the same type, but in all the right ways. It's charming and incredibly silly, but remains clever about it and doesn't out-stay its welcome and finishes before there's any chance of it slipping up. Bonus points for Sony's ability to shoe-horn every possible Sony device into every scene prominently. It made the end of Casino Royale look like a test. Bonus bonus points to whoever made the trailer for doing an awful job.

Next up was Clerks. It's...weird? I'm fairly certain I enjoyed it, but I also think that the fact I wrote that means I didn't get it, even though about half an hour after watching it, something clicked and I thought I did get it. I dunno! See, I enjoyed and thoroughly understood Dogma, also by Kevin Smith, so maybe I did get this and did enjoy it and it hasn't properly sunk in. Bonus points for a hilarious event near the end.

Coming up third is Annie Hall. The last (first? I can't remember) Woody Allen film I watched was Match Point, which I gave up on about half-way through because absolutely nothing of bloody note happened (this seemed to be about a minute before anything did, but by that point I'd wasted an hour and didn't care for a pay-off). Anyhow, I'm entirely used to the style and humour used throughout for various reasons. I didn't think it was amazing, but I was enjoying it and thought it was solidly good. Whilst I didn't really know where Clerks was going, I didn't have any problem with how it was doing it. With Annie Hall, despite its short-average length, I still felt it dragged on a bit too long and felt the ending wasn't quite as full as it should've been. I think it's safe to say that at this point, Woody Allen perhaps isn't quite for me though. I won't object to watching more, but I won't speak up for it.

Finally and unlike the others, a film that's been on my list for a few years, Amélie. What a charming, wonderful, lovely film. I was really concerned that my expectations of its quality and brief plot out-line were far in excess of what it would deliver, but instead for once my expectations were bested. I don't really know what to say. The look, the characters, the music. It all blends together so nicely. The fact that it's still human though, despite how crazy it gets. It's just so damn heartwarming and very funny when it wants to be. I actually feel a bit of regret for watching it alone. Not that you can't and it certainly works well anyhow, but I think it'd be even more enjoyable surrounded by people you're fond of.

I believe the next couple of films I watch may be All The President's Men and Scarface, but I'm a little concerned they'll be heavy going (and I won't have the TV and lounge to myself) so it may only be one and another, shorter, lighter film. Maybe Adam Sandler!

Clerks is definitely one of those movies that gets better the more times you watch it, preferably with friends who have also seen it before and can quote it to death.

I have to say Annie Hall was good but kind of ruined for me by all the refrences to jokes over the years on tv and articles and stuff which is probably why i didnt find it to funny.

I'm a big Kevin Smith fan and have seen every movie of his, Clerks is a classic indie hit and a weird beast, most of his movies like Clerks and Clerks 2 focus on interesting dialogues and the characters. But like sabrage said, his movies are best watched with friends and get better after multiple watchings.

The amount of work put into the various monsters for the last 20 minutes of the movie is absurd. They had a crew of 60 people building all the monsters and avoiding cgi as much as possible (eg bar the wraith and giant snake) and going for practical effects. Some of those monsters are in the movie for all of maybe 10 seconds.

I really wanted the film to continue when it ended.

It was a clever idea but one thing they didn't explain was why it's always dumb teenagers being the victim in horror movies.

The parts in the containment facility were far superior to the rest of the film. I must say that I would have likely enjoyed it more had they killed of all the wooden characters relatively early and focused on the survival of the other two within the facility. Could have been an OTT black mesa-esque thing there.

Just watched The Avengers and thought it was ok, but not the awesomesauce everyone else seems to. Once again Downey steals every scene he's in; he was definitely the highlight of the film.
