If you enjoyed that, make sure you watch Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zu_Warr...Magic_Mountain

Its essentially the film that kickstarted batshit insane wire-fu films. Its a totally loopy film but lord its so much fun to watch.

Btw, this film was a direct inspiration for Big Trouble in Little China. :D

Zu Warriors is a great film, and some of the practical effects are still impressive today. Really good.

I'm not sure if it was a direct influence, but Zu Warriors reminds me a lot of The Storm Riders. I feel what Zu Warriors did with practical effcts, Storm Riders did with CG - sometimes its effects just fill the screen like a Final Fantasy battle. At times it's as weirdly beautiful as it is bonkers.

I haven't kept up at all since around 1996, but Iron Monkey (the one with Donnie Yen, from 1993) is probably still worth watching too.
It was one of the first I watched, so it may have impressed me more than it would have later, but still.

There's just one problem with Iron Monkey. It commits the sin of speeding up the fights in post-production which is a shame as the fight choreography is outstanding.

I haven't seen the film in a while though so my brain might be playing tricks on me. Think i'll watch it again.

ah, yeah. I can't remember either. As I said, it was one of the first I watched, so I probably wouldn't have noticed if they'd sped it up. It would change it quite a bit.

I caught Last Vegas at the local cheap theater. It was predictable, but worth the $2.75 entry fee to see some distinguished actors awkwardly throw a bachelor party in Vegas. The camera shots were a bit over-the-top, though. It's like "HEY GUYS, we know there aren't any young actresses in the actual script, so we will pan to the surrounding T&A every chance we get."

House of Flying Daggers has some amazing locations, but it's clearly style over substance. The story is so overdone, and the script is like a broken record. The gratuitous CGI doesn't help. Zhang Ziyi looks as lovely as ever though. It's not just scenery porn... (I kid, I kid)

I also saw Fist of Legend, and the fight scenes are amazing. The Wachowskis also thought so, the Matrix dojo scenes have a lot of visual references.

Gravity. It did absolutely everything I wanted in a film. Better yet, it didn't waste any time with current hollywood contrivances like flashback scenes, forced romances, and character arcs that go nowhere. It was lean and to the point. Loved it.

House of Flying Daggers was the second of an unofficial trilogy of wuxia films Zhang Yimou did. Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower being the other two. I didn't particularly like flying daggers either. But Hero and Golden Flower are outstanding films.

Edit: god I hate typing on a phone.

Agreed, it's definitely the weakest of the three.

Drunken Master is totally bonkers. 105 minutes of all-out badassery.
How old was the old man? IMDb tells me he was at 66, but he didn't do his own stunts. Did he?
EDIT: He was doubled by someone. Still, very impressive.
Also very impressive, Jackie's aunt. Classy stuff.

Once you're done with wuxia films, I'll point you towards martial arts films in general with fight choreography and stunts that put ballet to shame.

Drunken Master II is equally bonkers, and it even has something to say about the plundering of China by those dirty foreigners.
Anita Mui is probably the best character in the movie, what a great performance.

^Shaolin Soccer was great, but I was watching it when I was like 12 years old so I might be wrong.
It's totally over the top unofficial NES Goal 3 movie adaptation.

Shaolin Soccer is the best. It's "actually" Oliver and Benji live action.
The best part is the match with the guys with the wrenches turning into a battlefield.

The Desolation of Smaug is incredible. They did the dragon justice. I even liked that elf from Lost!

I just watched Hero and it's absolutely staggering. Truly an epic film, larger than life. Great acting from everyone, the fight scenes are great and most frames could be hanged as portraits.
Viewing through my European eyes, Enlightened Absolutism has fallen out of fashion after the allegedly "Enlightened" fed the aristocracy instead of the people. Confucian though may be different, but considering past and current events, at least for some Chinese this should raise red flags, or should I say little red books?
I also read a review proclaiming that this film proves the Chinese lost the cultural war with the Japanese. Here we have an "historical" film lifting techniques and design from Kurosawa, like the Rashomon plot and the use of different colors, as in Ran. I think this is like complaining about sci-fi shows being similar to Star Trek.

After seeing several chinese films, I weep for Zhang Ziyi. Being typecast as The Woobie, many times (attempted) rape victim, must be harsh.

Kinda have mixed feelings with The Hobbit today. Sure, the part when they get to Smaug and escaping the woods were filled with awesome but the rest of the movie felt dragged on with some pacing problems. Too few interesting stuff to indulge in unlike the last movie, which was something that I want to go on past the third hour. It was still marvellous to watch even I do get some slight motion sickness watching it in 3D.
