Can anybody recommend me a band that doesn't sound like:
it should belong in Middle Earth
it's trying too hard with gimicks
TooL (I am not a sad mystic philosopher)

I will start going through the thread but the first few Scandinavian posts put me off. Nothing against them (they sound quite sophisticated actually) but I prefer something rough that sounds like it was put together in a garage or a basement. Raw and rough. Wish I could find something that was like Metallica's Black Album.

If you want raw I'd stay away from anything that sounds like the Black Album, that was hella commercial. Instead look into stuff like Chörnyj Woron, Whipstriker or Sauron (yeah yeah, the name but they cite Sodom, Kreator, Bathory and Slayer in the chorus). Or Hellhammer, Satanic Rites is the best demo ever.

Or the last Manilla Road album 'cause it sounds like it was recorded in a dungeon.

I was sceptical, but it doesn't sound nearly as bad as you'd think it would.

So, Candlemass and Entombed have done a little split, where they cover each others' songs. It's pretty great.

Considering 2012 was basically a write-off for metal, I'm glad '13 is doing fine with Lord Dying signing to Relapse.

No need to wait until December before I can tell you what my album of the year is.

Between the Buried and Me releases a new album and you think 2012 was a "write-off"?

Considering that BTBAM is about as appealing to me as a gargling a swarm of bees, yes.

Witchcraft and Unleashed both released new albums, Hellwell and Trial released their debuts and I'm pretty sure that Sabbat released fifteen live albums and splits which is about ten less than Nun's Laughter did so I wouldn't go as far as to say that it was a total write-off.

But man, did you catch how bad Manowar and Destruction were? Bloody hell.

Wait, are these the same guys as Ghost? Why the name change?

Also, something different for a change.

I read that they had to go under that name during a US tour so maybe it won't be permanent.
