Is Brutal Legend worth $10? It's 80 on MC but I'm looking for the opinion of someone's who's played it. What's a comparable game in terms of style and gameplay?

Not much to compare it too because it's a weird mix of a 3rd person action platformer (like mario or spyro or ratchet and clank vs something like Uncharted) with boss battles that reflect very simplistic RTS games.

For most of the game you'll run around wailing on dudes with your axes, exploring the world, performing jumping puzzles, that sort of thing. You also get a pretty sweet car to drive around. You'll collect currency to buy upgrades for your weapons and your car and new abilities. Sometimes you'll have guys helping you, they'll sort of just run around killing stuff with you.

For the boss fights, you'll get a kind of RTS where you and the opponent have bases, and the objective is to destroy the opponents base. There's towers along the way, which if you control give you more fans, which you use to buy units. The RTS really amounts to grabbing a bunch of guys and telling them to go to A, while you fight at B because you're that good, then everyone goes to C and you win. It's a bit strange to control, but it's not terrible and it can be fun to double team with all the different units.

Style-wise the game looks great and sounds great. Everything looks heavy metal. The factions in the game all look unique, with the undead all looking like Cure fans who watch nothing but Tim Burton movies. Then there's glam rockers who look like Poison knock offs, then there's the demons who look like they should be on death metal album covers. The voice acting in it is also top notch, and I don't even like Jack Black. But he doesn't annoy me in this. The soundtrack is also brilliant, but probably only if you like your metal.

I never got to play the multiplayer because I had it on 360 and didn't have gold, but it's essentially the boss battles where you're playing real people.

It's a fun game, funny writing, lots to do, lots to see and in my opinion well worth 10 bucks.

According to Tim Schafer, Tim Burton and Robert Smith are both at the bottom of the Sea (people who played will understand).

Anyone ever buy anything from DLGamer - are they legit?

Just saw that Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is on sale for $24 and I'm thinking of pulling the trigger.

If you liked the previous Double fine games you'll love it.
It's full of charm but it has some flawed gameplay.
For me 10 bucks is a steal.

Sleeping Dogs Limited Edition for $7.49, on Square Enix's own store (that link is to the Australian version, which was a pleasant surprise), seems a good deal, you get a Steam key.

Didn't the PC version drop most of the licensed tracks? I've been on the fence with this game wondering if I should bite on the PC version or just hunt the bargain bins for a console version

I highly recommend this game as being loads of fun. Be sure to get the HD pack on Steam for free if you're computer can handle it.

That's a good deal! I'm longing for some GTA-ness, after Saint's Row 3 was a bit too hoity toity for me.
Alas, in the most ridiculous implemetation of "German youth protection law", I can only buy this title in the hours between 23:00 and 06:00. Liking this much better than cutting all the best pieces out of your game!

Wait - I had this problem with SR3 in the humble bundle: Can I still even register the key with steam, when I'm in germany?

Another recommendation for Sleeping Dogs, and also to remind those who buy it that the DLC is also on sale on Gamersgate for their spring sale. The only three you worth buying are Nightmare in North Point, Zodiac Tournament and Year of the Snake, all three add more missions and are great for the price, the rest are packs that bring nothing useful other than occasional mini-games and skins.

Also Tomb Raider 2013 is on sale for 15 on GMG, probably can add a 20% voucher on that as well.

EDIT: Brutal Legend has the full liscened music (108 songs) in the game, the soundtrack is just tracks written for the game. Also fully worth it for the price if you have ever enjoyed anything from Double Fine, same humour, same interesting gameplay with flaws.

As far as I know all the licenced music is there.
You could be mistaken with the separated sountrack download which consists of 20 or so songs.

The PC version has all the songs on it. I don't know if you get all those if you buy the version with the downloadable album, but in game, all 107 songs are present.

As for buying it, I think it's a bargain already for 10 bucks, but if you're just going to stick it on a pile you'll get it cheaper in the summer or christmas sales perhaps.

According to the store page, you'll get the low violence version, anyway. So I'd expect no problems on that front (probably not what you had in mind, though).

I'll provide a differing opinion on Brutal Legend; I think it's a bad game. I think the combat, both the hack'n'slash and the RTS elements are simplified to the degree of tedium, that the driving feels off and unsatisfying, where secondary quests get repetitive almost immediately upon their availability and that the main missions vary somewhere between passable and rubbish; I hope you like escort quests!

I don't think it's got anything to do with liking Double Fine either. I played and thoroughly enjoyed Psychonauts, minor flaws easily pushed aside. I think that Brutal Legend the game is bad, whilst Brutal Legend the aesthetic design, both the music and the environment, is wonderful. I do not think the latter makes up anywhere near enough for the former to become acceptable.
Powered by Steam. And biscuits. I'm also a twit and dabble in creative writing.

GMG has the Total War Master Collection for 18.74, less than the price of just Shogun 2 on Steam.

I'd say BL was worth $10 because it is gorgeous and a glorious realisation of fantastic concept art which is a pleasure to discover and pore over. But it's a bad game which is tedious to play, I'll second the JG Man on that. A fun and occasionally thrilling aesthetic experience all the same.

Can't speak for DLGamer but Steam themselves have had that game cheaper so I'd maybe hold-off (because Steam aren't usually the cheapest of sale locations).

If you like classic metal you MUST own Brutal Legend - but as a game it varies from OK to Meh with some outright naff bits.

IF you love classic metal tho, you MUST own it.

PSA #3: you can get a special accessory that gives bonus experience in the game by accepting an invitation from an existing player. This works even after you've created your free account. This is my invitation link, if you feel so inclined.
To clear that up - if you're an existing subscriber you get the expansion (if you didn't have it) and 30 days of time

If you're a NEW subscriber (e.g. free play account) you get the game, expansion and 60 days (30 with the game - 30 from the deal).

Deffo worth doing it if you're remotely interested in the game - I'm currently enjoying it far more than I did GW2

p.s. I'd have accepted your referral but it seems you have to create an account at the same time so it's a bit late for me - sorry!
