I predict I'll enjoy playing some computer games.

We'll see early footage of the next Assassin's Creed game, which will be set in Victorian London. It will cure me of my Ezio-induced apathy for the series. Actually, that's more of a desperate hope than a prediction. I want to climb up Big Ben in the fog.

I guarantee that we'll see the next game out in time for holiday 2012.

Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way when playing it. Unfortunately it now seems to be Bioware's thing. And who could blame them when there are people out there who discuss the taste of Quarian sweat on the games forums? If Bioware released a blow-up Tali sex-doll with a price tag of >$1000, they'd cover the cost of making TOR several times over.

    1) The indie Bundle war will escalate with Wolfire eventually singing "Our bundles bigger than your bundle, we;ve got more games than a game convention" and releasing every indie game ever for 0.99.

    2) CDProjekt will release a game they designate as "B- if the right questions come up in the exam" only to complain when it still revieves a Metacritic rating of 82%.

    3) Nolan North will overstretch his voice acting credentials by trying to play a Cockney.

    4) Attempts to introduce "Good New Games" as an alternative distribution platform will fail due to it having a nigh on unpronouncable acronym.

    5) Half Life 3 will be released to wide acclaim. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAA.

January: Assassin's Creed 3 is announced and teased, with the story returning to the original game's setting of the Holy Land, focussing on the events of the 1967 Six-Day War along with it's prelude and aftermath.

February: Mass Effect 3's launch week sees EA's authentication servers DDOS'd into the ground both by legitimate activation requests, cracked keygen programs and hacktivists making a point about DRM. The resultant ruination of the launch of what many people expect to otherwise be the game of the year sees the start of the mainstream backlash against online DRM. BioWare splits acrimoniously from EA, citing the game's launch problems (not helped by "EA's poor commitment to customer satisfaction" - Doctor Ray) and lack of support for last year's SW:TOR as the primary reason for the split.

Feb 14th: The bell curve of Tali/Liara/FemShep threesome porn reaches it's peak on Saint Valentine's day.

March: Bioware announces KOTOR 3 to be run on the Mass Effect 3 engine. "It'll be published by Bethesda, so we're getting Chris Avellone to help with the story bible." - Bioware press release

April: Microsoft announce that they are revamping Games for Windows Live, and doubling down on their commitment to the PC as a platform.

May: Microsoft close down Age of Empires Online citing large operating costs.

June: Microsoft announce their flagship PC game, Age of Empires: Facebook. Several Microsoft executives are found lynched with gamepad cables.

July: Chris Metzen departs from Blizzard after a drunken tirade on Twitter against the World of Warcraft game design team, alleging that they told him 'Thrall is going to be the 5.1 loot pinata so [Chris] needs to stop being a bitch already and give us some bullshit lore reason to keep the RP nerds happy'.

August: Eidos Montreal tease an as-yet-untitled Deus Ex game starring Alex Denton, all but admitting that Invisible War was shit and they're trying to make it properly this time.

September: School starts up again. It's a quiet month for PC games.

October: Ubisoft executive admits during a press conference that the PC version of Assassin's Creed 3 will be the only version of the game, because the next generation of consoles still isn't here, before breaking down in bitter sobbing.

November: Microsoft announce that they are revamping Games for Windows Live, and doubling down on their commitment to the PC as a platform.

December: Star Wars: the Old Republic becomes a cautionary tale in the MMO industry. The login and world servers buckled under the strain in launch month, with EA spending millions on purchasing and maintaining additional data centres- which were quickly rendered unnecessary when the game began haemorraging players three months after launch. Barely a year after it's launch, Star Wars: the Old Republic is announced as going free-to-play. Any Lightsaber-using class must be unlocked with an in-game token that requires many hours of grinding to earn, or is available for 3 of real-world money (Origin-store exclusive). Players wishing to travel between star systems must either complete a mandatory five-minute on-rails space shooter sequence in the vein of Rebel Assault, or purchase a stack of tokens that allow instantaneous hyperspace travel (Origin-store exclusive).

Dec 22nd: Warren Ellis leaks the announcement of Hostile Waters 2 over Twitter, along with a FreakAngels RPG. (because hey, I can dream)

Jan 2nd 2013: Gabe Newell issues a personal apology via international newswires as the Steam Christmas 2012 sale brings the entire internet grinding to a painful halt.

Darksiders 2 will be better received by both critics and general audience than Zelda: Skyward Sword and not just because it's a Zelda-styled game in HD.

To be fair, Shep is pretty much team mom to everybody anyway. There isn't a companion in the bunch that doesn't either hero-worship Shep or use Shep as surrogate parent.

Damn, Icarus, wish fulfillment much? That said, watch reality be just as ridiculous. And, of course,

Also my "if they predict it then it will come" wishful thinking prediction is that Beyond Good and Evil 2 will finally be released and there will be a PC version.

Ubisoft announces that the current generation consoles are too weak to power Beyond Good and Evil 2, and decides to launch it exclusively for PC, DRM-Free or at most Activate and Play Offline. The Assassin's Creed series will now use the kinda photorealistic but optimized DX10 engine that AC1 had. Sequels or spiritual sucessors will be made for King Kong and Rayman. Michel Ancel designs District 10:The VideoGame that singlehandedly destroys the stereotype that movie games are crap.

Yeah, as ridiculous as I ended up getting (Although I think some of that is actually plausible), I genuinely think 2012 is going to see some major backlash against online DRM in general. Maybe in the form on a sustained DDOS on Origin's login, a leak of an authentication algorithm a la Crysis 2, or simply a hard server crash rendering either ME3 or another big release totally unplayable.

I buy Battlefield 3, which is then less buggy. Dice does a 2142 themed expansion for it.

I didn't find her annoying, but compared to most of the series' other female characters, she's probably preferable to most. Miranda and Ashley both felt utterly dull and boring, whilst Liara is probably far more sexy-alien fan-service than Tali could ever be.

Is Mass Effect even that huge a release? I was under the impression that neither ME1 or 2 sold staggeringly huge quantities.

Yes, the specialist press really love Mass Effect, and it has a massive awareness amongst the enthusiast crowd; but I don't think it has the mass market appeal and awareness that even a franchise like Assassin's Creed has.

Anyway, personally I don't think there will be a huge backlash: but then my opinion that DRM has on the whole become less intrusive in the past few years seems a minority opinion anyway...

Seven million copies as of last April. The initial under-reporting was due to VGCharts, and they notoriously under-report everything.

    My predictions:
Borderlands 2 is either incredible or really not incredible, I'm going to go with the former. I'm hoping it'll be what Assassin's Creed 2 was to AC1; i.e. expanding on the tech demo of the original with more variation of stuff to do. There's so much potential in Borderlands, and as much as I love the first one, it wasn't great and I still can't handle more than 2 hours at a time in co-op and about 10 minutes playing by myself.

BF3 sees BC2, 1943 and 2142 DLC, they are all glorious and we get to use M1 Garands in the core game. I missed that little guy.

That's about all I'm really looking forward to next year, life is far cheaper that way.

Fewer people will have money to spend upgrading their gaming rigs or buying AAA games. However, the first part of that will probably not be a big deal because lots of people will have gone and upgraded for Skyrim.

Diablo III''s always-online feature will cause internet problems in the UK for a day or two at release (cue much moaning on the web), but few people will stick with the game.

Areas that can't get any form of decent Internet coverage now will continue to be cut off due to a lack of investment.

The folks who developed Bastion will talk about their next game.

We'll all continue to wonder what anyone sees in the newest glossy shooter / declare that the newest glossy shooter is excellent and complain about all the arty types.

Nintendo's 3DS will continue to make slow sales, but will probably do just enough to avoid being sent to the scrap heap by its parent company. Most of us will continue to wonder who cares about 3D.
