So I saw this game is coming out on Steam in a few days, but it's not up for preorder or anything. =/ I wanted to buy it before I forgot!

Oh, did you get any special message about mutual destruction or something? Would be cool if they thought of that.

I had a few very stupid encounters with teleporters recently. I found myself with an overabundance of crew, so I gave boarding ships a try. The first ship was a rebel that did an FTL jump with two of my crew still on it, because I forgot to disable their engines. The second ship was a pirate that got torn to shreds by asteroids, also with two of my crew still on it. Head, meet desk.

Fortunately I did learn from my mistakes. In my most recent game I was attacking a ship with beam weapons, set a lot of fires, then sent my boarders to finish off the remaining crew. That turned out to be really risky, because the ship had only a few points of hull integrity left, and for every system that was destroyed by fire, it took another point of damage. My boarders dispatched the crew and beamed back onto my ship with only seconds to spare before the ship broke apart completely. That was awesome!

No, both ships exploded and then the regular message appeared for whenever your ship gets destroyed... I agree, though, that it would have been cool if they had thought about it. XD

I still haven't given a try to teleporters... The stealth ship works great if you get used to it, though. ^^

Yah, this is something I need to do more. I will fight everything even if I lose 50% hull, which is not worth it unless you got a ton of scrap for it, which would be wasted on repairs.

    Nothing wrong with running!

I tried using the teleporters for the first time yesterday with similar efforts ^^. Couldn't get them to beam back in time. Is there a timer or something?

Having lots of fun with the beta so far. I kinda wish the game had a longer curve though. Maybe space out the systems etc. a little more and give you time to add more systems to the ship but still turn up the difficulty as you keep going. Might just be me though.

I played my first few games on normal and then flew into easy for a few. Beat the first iteration of the Rebel starship but accidentally started the second fight straight away and got decimated by Drones.

Do people have any good strategies so far, or weapon combos they prefer?

Also, is anyone else having a bug when you save and quit that blackscreens the computer and only lets you perform a hard reset? I've already sent it on to the FTL guys but just wondering if it is just me.

I had a lot of fun with the drone-heavy Engi ship you unlock by getting to Sector 5.

I lucked into a second ion blaster thingy to double up on my main weapon, and I crippled each opponent's systems with fast-recharging dual ion shots while my 3 attack drones tore them apart. I do hope another of the unlockable ships has more drone bay space.

How is the meta-game / unlock system with this? It's the sort of thing I'd love but just struggle with because of a lack of direction. Achievements have done wonders for my enjoyment of free-form games, and love stuff like Desktop Dungeons where you slowly unlock new and different stuff...

There are a lot of ships to unlock. The actual 'pop up' achievements I haven't seen. Steam listed 45 of them but wouldn't let me look at the list. Might not go live until full release. Maybe someone else here can correct me if they got access.

I had an achievement but Steam isn't registering it yet. It's not showing up on my played list either and friends can't see what I'm playing.

I can use a few hints for the Engi ship. I haven't gotten further than sector 5, not even after 6 hours of playing. My main problem seems to be that I'm not heavily armed enough once I reach that sector to get through their shields.

Upgrade your shields early on. Up until the last sector you are probably okay with 3 blips (your biggest threat will be boarding parties). And if a fight looks too hard, run. It is better to live and run away than to wipe everyone out.

The third shield level costs 90 (40+50) scrap, and the energy needed to power it is an extra 50-70 scrap, so I'd actually advise against upgrading your shields past the third level before sector 7 or so. (On easy, anyway.) I usually upgrade my engines before that, not only for extra Evasion, but also because they can take more damage before they're no longer able to do FTL jumps. If you encounter a ship that can get past two shields and a defense drone before that, yes, run.

Okay, general question: In what module would you place a Zoltan crew member? If you have something that needs to be powered, do you replace an experienced crew member with a Zoltan? Or do you place him with a system that doesn't need manning, like drones or cloak? And do those systems receive bonuses from the Zoltan other than extra power?

I noticed that putting a Zoltan in the weapons module provides one unit of power to the first weapon in your list, which presumably gets a recharge bonus. It got a bit annoying when I had to hot-swap between my four weapons when missiles were running low, because even deactivating the first weapon still leaves it powered by the Zoltan.

It can be difficult to get through their shields without either an ion cannon to shut down systems or missiles (as long as they don't have a drone on defence).

I'd highly recommend picking up a slug crew member if possible. I got extra 'blue' options from having his telepathic powers and it stopped a boarding party once too.

If anyone has weapon combo suggestions I'd love to hear them. I upped my shield to level three and powered weapons but didn't upgrade stuff like O2, Medbay, Sensors, Doors. Do you guys find those useful?

O2 and Medbay I find to not really be worth it. O2 is only a factor if I have to vent the entire ship to kill fire (during combat) or if it gets damaged. In both cases, if I can't repair it, I have other things to worry about.
Medbay is useful for surviving attackers (and I wish I had upgraded it during my last adventure in the final sector), but usually you get a chance to pause and heal people up between battles.

Sensors I find to be worth it to upgrade to whatever lets you see the people on board enemy ships (2?). Usually you want to take out weapons and shields, but it might be worthwhile attacking a different room if you see a near-dead person in there.

I haven't found any particular advantage to blast doors, since enemies teleport in anyway.

I assume you guys are playing a beta? Anyone try the Onlive demo?
This game should be released really soon, huh

Looks interesting. $25 for beta buy-in is crazy though.

Are you talking about the Kickstarter? Because the spirit if Kickstarter isn't meant to be "Pay money for a product" but rather" support the product that looks interesting and get a few incentives for doing so."

Well I am playing it right now because I pledged $10 to the kickstarter project way back, so it was substantially less for some of us.

Edit to clarify: $25 would have granted much earlier beta access, but all kickstarter pledgers can play it now.

Not so much a beta as early access to the final version. People who pledged $25 got into the actual beta, and the rest of us who pledged $10 received our keys last week.

The only reason you'd want to upgrade the oxygen and medical systems is so that they won't completely shut down after one hit, because the advantage for upgrading is marginal at best. However, event spoilers: Some encounters with enemy ships can hack your oxygen and medical systems so they stop working while your ship is either being set on fire or boarded, and having those systems upgraded means that the hacking isn't 100% effective; they just lose one power bar.

There are also certain events where an upgraded medical or sensor system gives you additional blue options. I haven't found any events that require upgraded doors, but you're going to want to upgrade those nonetheless so that you can easily suffocate boarders. The rock ship is especially good at this, because it has airlocks at both ends of the ship, and any place that boarders teleport into can be depressurized without putting other rooms in danger.

Speaking of the rock ship, in my most recent game I had a really sweet combo going with a pegasus missile (two shots) and a halberd beam. First I would fire one missile volley at the shields, which guarantees at least one hit nine times out of ten, and then use the beam to cut across the weapons module and any adjacent room. Cloak, recharge, repeat. It was devastating.

In case I have enough crew members to support every system that needs somebody to get the 100% out of it, I usually put my Zoltan crew at O2, as it is one of the few systems you'll always need. You can take energy from the Medbay in case you need it, but taking energy from O2 can be fatal. So, if I have a Zoltan at my O2 I'll always be saving power.

P.S.: How did you get the rock ship?

My favourite weapon combo so far has been an Ion Blaster II (that's the one with the ludicrously short charge time, maybe 2 seconds for 1 ion damage), a Glaive beam (4 dmg per room, I think) and a Laser Blaster (2 dmg). 7 power needed, but very little could withstand me, especially with the addition of a Weapon Pre-igniter and Zoltan shields. I still got my arse handed to me by the flagship, but up to then I'd been unstoppable.

I usually upgrade engines once or twice, then shield, then weapons if I've picked up something useful, otherwise engines some more. Doors are good too, and if I have a teleporter that gets boosted so it cools down quicker.
