This game is so badass, the campaign degenerated in the last third, but its one of my all time favourites.
Does anyone have anything further back for DotA ancestors?

That might be the best game briefing I have ever watched. Oh, the things I missed out on by being so young...

It still holds up, gog.com really needs to sell this, it was EA so its possible

Interesting(?) tidbit: this was originally going to be Future Strike, the sequel to Nuclear Strike. I remember watching the teaser for it and, years later, wondering what the hell became of the series.
Ha, awesome video.
I vaguely remember this game from my youth, I suspect I may have played the demo or something. Never realised it had such a complex multi-player mode though. Does it actually stand-up these days?
Oh god, I had some jolly good time with this. It actually had split-screen functionality on PC, so that's not a video gimmick up there.
Shit, wait, what, I'm 26, am I old?!
Oh my fucking god you brilliant brilliant man, I was only thinking about that game a few days ago but couldn't remember the name. Loved everything about it. The campaign for a naive child was fantastic with lots of nasty weapons to unleash oh crims. Multiplayer was even better and god it was just so addictive.
It's only a demo, no piracy here.

Online coop (you might need hamachi these days) as well. The it very much stands up, I never tested it on win 7 but it was buttery smooth on xp. The single and coop are the same thing, smash tv meets freeroam. The versus could be released today and be totally relevant as a stand alone.
It's a game which should be part of everyone's gaming history, even if it's hardly a revolution now.

Wizardy is a cool dude, and I like a lot of his posts. Sorry about the trolling.
Now all this has made my head hurts, because of the laughing.
@Wizardry: Everybody knows you have a strict definition of RPG's, but that your definition. Everybody else can have his own definitions, so you should not act surprised if different people do things like saying DOTA has RPG elements (of hack and slash flavour).
Now, is true that also have RTS elements. Is a hybrid. The roots can be tracked back by the RTS line or by the RPG line, and If you follow the RPG line, theres a number of "mud"-like games for mainframes like the PDP11, that are the origin of the CRPG games, IMHO.
